R55 No start help

Hey everyone I’m new to the community and would like some help on my r55. I’m a mechanic by trade, and have prior experience on these cars. I bough this car from a friend who had it sitting for an year under unknown conditions. I did a head gasket job and timing chain service to it. I used the Mini Cooper timing tool to set the timing. And have assembled everything back to how it was. I noticed I’m not getting any fuel. So I replace the fuel pump relay. It won’t turn over it just cranks. I also replaced the crankshaft sensor and vanos solenoid. And oil pressure sensor. I tried connecting my obd2 scanner and my matco maxme scanner with no luck also. I get an error message on both my obd2 readers. I checked the fuse and it’s also fine. I’m so lost I checked the motor mount ground and valve cover ground. What do you guys recommend. I’m really hoping it’ something small I over looked and not the Dme. Thank you.

welcome aboard...

Did you check if you have spark? did you try quick start?

If the OBD reading cannot establish communication with the DME, then you have 1 of 3 issues...bad/missing DME relay in fuse box (under the hood), bad DME or bad fuse box (behind passenger kick panel)

where are you located?

Hey I checked the fuse. I haven’t checked the relay do you happen to know which relay it is? I’ve been thinking since it’s not starting it’s a bad dme

the relays are in the fuse box next to the DME...if you flip the cover, the first two relays are for the engine. the upper two are for the fans.

do you know to happen if water got into the car through the sunroof?

To be honest I’m not sure all I know is the car sat for about an year all I did was the headgasket and timing chain. What would happen if water went thru the sunroof ?

if the water got to the fuse box, it may cause the car not to start or sometimes start and other times not. It can also make the car loose connection/communication to the DME.

check my build post #15. even though the car started, i had trouble keeping it running and just decided to replace the fuse box anyway...after that it was good.

I’ll double check that relay later today. Is there a for sure way to confirm the dme is dead or the fuse box has water damage before I go out and spend a good chunk of change on This car ?

without using ISTAD (Mini/BMW dealer level SW), it is somewhat hard without spending some money to check/trouble shoot...if you have another Cooper you can try using the fuse box to see if you can talk to the DME. that's why I asked your location perhaps someone near you can help out.

I see, maybe I can go to the junkyard, I’m curious if maybe a r56 fusebox can work on a r55

Did you try the fuse box first?

You could swap but need to be of same type i.e. manual or auto or S or non S 2007 to 2010 or 2011 to 2014...

Buying everything isnt necessarily a good thing. You want to trouble shoot and at the same time not waste money on not needed parts.

In general if the part numbers match, no need to reprogram. But it is better to line up the modules. You can use Winkfp (you will need the files called SPdatens) and NCSexpert OR ISTAP.
