Camber Plates Required?!

Camber Plates Required?!
Hi!
I'm getting some new tires on my 2012 Cooper S, figured it's a great time to get an alignment. Called up a local shop and they said, "ooooh, yeah, with those cars you probably will need new adjustable shock mounts to get the camber right. The stock mounts aren't adjustable and the stock setup will eat up your new tires super quick." They said the camber plates are $500 a pair.
uuuuuuh, wut? Smells like BS to me. I thought camber plates were for performance/racing, not just driving around enjoying your MINI! Am I right or am I right? Is there some weird reason to get adjustable shock mounts/camber plates that I don't know about? This is the first time I've ever heard of such a thing from an alignment shop. My instinct is just to go somewhere else.
Thoughts?

Going to move you to the Gen2 section Couple of things; 1.) Our cars could use a little more negative camber when doing some twisties but as far as ruining tires without it, I don't think so. 2.) Now if you lower the car the back end is what gets wacked relative to camber, the front suspension system can compensate for it. 3.) I'm a Gen1 guy but pretty sure there is a way to rework your existing strut plates to provide more negative camber and that there are threads in the Gen2 section on how to do it.
