2002 MCS JCW Clutch Issue

Hi all,

I recently found a 2002 Mini Cooper S with the full JCW Package for sale in my local area for what appears to be a good price with 170,000 miles. The car starts and is in great condition as far as I can tell, but the current owner claims it has a bad clutch and that because of this it is undrivable. He started the car for me, and the engine seems to run fine but said that he was hesitant because he didn't want to further damage the transmission by depressing the clutch pedal. I am worried about this issue, as I know that some of the early model MCS were known to have some transmission issues and I am afraid of purchasing the car to discover that the entire transmission needs to be swapped. The car is undrivable according to the seller, which means that any sort of PPI or checking is not possible. Does anyone have any advice regarding if it is possible to determine if it is just the clutch that is bad?

Thanks!

Well you did ask.

If you cannot verify the transmission is ok then the price should reflect the replacement of it. If you are not able to do the work yourself then I am thinking the cost to replace with those miles make the car a recycle yard candidate.
