SES codes question

i have two codes popping up when scanned. P2098 and P1496. From what I can find, the 2098 seems to be an O2 sensor or possible exhaust leak allowing oxygen into the exhaust and causing the sensor to read more oxygen than normal? The other is something about a fan clutch. I’m guessing it’s the radiator fan, but that fan kicks on just fine as far as I can tell. Just curious if this is correct in what I’m reading.

When end I bought the car, the dealer said the light was on and they changed out the O2 sensors, but couldn’t get the light to turn off. I’m not sure if they reset everything to clear the codes, but as far as I know, the sensors are new.

I did notice, the SES light was off for a brief period of time this morning, but came back on. As soon as it did, the car seemed to idle a little rough. And is a bit rough to get going. But once you are driving, all seems normal.

Moving you to the Stock Problems/Issues section.

What year car, how many miles and what state did you buy it in.

It’s a 2005 S. 145,000 miles. Bought it in Illinois. I live in Southern Indiana. It’s history shows it originated out of New York and ended up in Chicago for some time. I noticed the exhaust is not looking all that great, so I’m hoping that may be part of the problem. What gets me is the hesitation in the motor at idle.

I am wondering whether the car could be legally sold with a CEL as most states have laws that say the car has to be able to pass an emissions test.

i wouldn’t think so, but I did verify that the o2 sensors were changed out with new ones. One thing I recently learned through this site is that I’m not using the proper gas. I have been putting in 87 octane fuel, but read on here that the minimum should be 91. I’m curious if this is causing the O2 sensor to read a faulty reading because of the difference in gas.

i also read where it causes the car to protect the engine from disaster, so I’m also curious if that is what is causing my rough idle and sluggish take offs. Cause once I’m going it seems to mellow out. and if it’s causing the motor to run hotter, I bet that is causing the fan clutch code to pop up because of how the car reacts to the change in temp and probably kicks the fan on differently? Just speculation. I’m going to get the rest of the regular fuel out, put some fuel system cleaner in and fill her up with premium 93 octane fuel. Then see how the car runs the next day or so.
