Timing Chain Replacement - Expected Cost

I was recently told by a BMW/Mini independent mechanic that I should replace the timing chain on a 2009 MC (non S, base) with about 93,000 kms on it.

I was quoted CDN $2,600.00 to do it. In another thread, I was told that sounds too steep.

What should I be expect to pay for this job? How many hours labour? How much for parts?

Can I assume that I could also do the valve cover and gaskets at the same time for no more labour? What else can be done at the same time, since the labour is being expended already?

Thanks, as always.

That was about the amount I paid to have it done at the dealer.

yes the valve cover and gaskets would overlap in labor so you’d save some money there. That seems to be about what people are charging for the job.

Some number of members have done a timing chain replacement themselves. A worthwhile bit of data to have is, how many hours did it take you?

Here in Massachusetts independents shop charge ~$100US/hour for labor. The cost of parts is around $440US of the cover and about $300US for the chain kit, 740 total.

$2600 CDN is about $2050 US. $2050US less $740US leaves $1310US, which translates to about 13 hours of labor. As a DIYer I tend to be less efficient than a mechanic that works full time, but based in the videos I've seen I would be willing to take on that job in a heartbeat.

that seems really high for the valve cover. They’re around 350 from the dealer near me. A few people have bought up some of the eBay valve covers for $150 and have had no issues. They seem to be the same valve covers too you might check it out.
