2009 r55s cranks but no start
Hey everyone, just picked up this mini two weeks ago and it hasn’t been very trustworthy at all. Its 2009 clubman s,103k miles, auto, all stock. The second day of owning it was check engine lights and problems. The gas cap was super loose and appeared to have moisture inside as well as bad gas. I treated the fuel, replaced the cap and all was great! Zipping around with no problems until yesterday afternoon trying to leave work. Started up and drove in with no problems, no sounds, and no lights. Now it just cranks with no start. The battery is a few months old but the voltage was on the low side after messing with the car yesterday so I charged it back up to full and tried to find out what was happening. I do not have a code reader yet, always have had old Cadillacs, but the yellow outline cel is on while cranking so I’m sure that might give some insight when I can check it. I checked for fuel into the hpfp, which is readily available as well as fuel from the hpfp and good results there too, but the fuel pump hasn’t been priming this whole time. I ran 12v to it while cranking and no changes either. Pulled the plugs, and they didn’t seem to have had any gas on them and wasn’t able to get a spark while testing either. I’ve checked all of the fuses, swapped relays around, everything seems ok and I don’t get it. The car wasn’t showing any signs of problems or issues in the morning, Park it for the day and then it doesn’t want to fire back up.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Trying to locate a code reader now. Is there something I’m missing to these cars? I’ve had plenty of turbo cars in the past, and an x5 as well so I understand the sensitivity of these motors but what might be going on?

a bmw/mini code reader is a plus to have, but having ISTA/D is much better. it comes with a K+Dcan usb cable and it will read EVERYTHING your car has.
A fellow NAM from NY had a similar issue where he had a misfire. he took it home, replaced the plugs and no start at all. we got it ISTA/D scanned and for whatever reason his tampering protection was on. the software is telling us to replace the CAS (Cas Access System).
other members also reported bad gas was the issue. you might have to drain the tank and put fresh gas.
there is also the fuse box on the passenger side that gets wet from a faulty rain drain.
a good scanner will get you a long way.

I’m happy to say I solved the problem...as in I no longer own the Mini. I’ve always wanted one, and I’m happy I finally gave myself the chance but holy damn what problematic little cars, and although it was one of the smoothest and most fun to drive cars I’ve owned, never again lol. I’m gonna miss the little clubbie for sure, but I’ll stick to my big block for fun and my Honda for a daily. Thanks for the help, and good luck!
