Power steering.

What are the most common signs that the power steering pump is on it's way out?

I've noticed over the last few days that my steering is getting heavier, and it seems to have a harder spot to turn the steering wheel at a certain point in the rotation of the steering wheel. Almost feels "notchy". I've never had steering problems on a car before, but this feels more like something mechanical (tie rod, ball joint, etc).

Car is an '06 with 168000 miles.

Sorry but I have to ask, have you checked the fluid level?

Yes, fluid level is good.

When I get the MINI back from the body shop (goes in tomorrow after someone hit passenger rear quarter panel ), I'll put it on stands and check to see if the steering wheel moves freely when not under load. I'll also check all of the mechanical components that could affect the steering.

It started to fail on mine, the steering works on/off. Then goes off. As long as the fluid, connections are fine then its the pump.

Also check that steering column first, those things rust and stiffen up:

Yeah, I figured that it had to be the pump. I was hoping not, but I guess that I'll have to face up to this being an expensive fix. Should have the MINI back this week. Body shop is waiting on the new bumper.

Well, eventually got the MINI back!!!

I noticed on my drive home from work on Friday, that the power steering actually got to be more like normal the closer I got to home. I drive about 55 miles one way. What would cause this?

Fluid level is good, tire pressures are correct, there are no leaks in the system, and the mechanicals all seem to be good.

Ordered a remanufactured OEM pump from Ferman BMW for $324.95. Unfortunately, the MINI is back to the body shop. I hit a very large raccoon on my way to work last Sunday night. Front bumper, radiator support panel, AC condenser, and radiator are all toast. Cruise was set @ 60, and the damn thing ran out in front of me.
