active spoiler

Would only ask if can't find info "anywhere". My active spoiler went up when I started my engine (not using manual button) and has remained stuck in that position. Not responding to manual switch..... speeding or slowing, etc. and constant ding and warning light.... I don't live in cold conditions and can't find anyone having to replace a motor or where the relay for this is. 2013 R59 roadster of course out of warranty. Any help or simillar incidents advice appreciated.

did you resolve this?

the spoiler is something on my R59 that I wish wasn't there - I can only see problems like yours down the road

if you didn't resolve this you might want to re-post in the R58 and R59 specific threads as the problem is unique to those two models ....

problem solved and cheaply

My pigheaded, aviation mechanic husband would not let this repair be left up to "another man" so I guess it's good he found the problem and cheap solution,..... I'm in and out of my trunk about 15x day with my job and it had something to do with the wire harness (email if want the details) and he is also creating a toggle system to bypass this such and such..... stopping the chiming and yet not altering the computer...said he would sell these instructions if interested.....lol.... anyway...if any other non cold climate friends have issue with malfunctioning active spoiler..just contact me if need my details...

Nice to know I am not isolated with the problem of a spoiler stuck in the up position, and the annoying warning chime. This issue presented itself a few months ago. At that time, a burned through fuse was the issue. Fuse replaced, issue repaired. Fuse blew again. I believe the fuse was burning through when the active spoiler was attempting to retract, however the spoiler was stuck. Lubricated the joints of the the spoiler, spoiler retracted, issue repaired. Now, a few more months down the road, spoiler is once again stuck in the up position. What a PIA. Nonetheless, it bears an issue that must be resolved. Fuse is not blowing, joints have been lubricated, and spoiler is still stuck, and annoying warning chime continues. I have contact a local mechanic, but to no avail. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a mechanic in this area that I can seek out; my option would be to leave the issue up to the dealership, or another shade tree mechanic business. I simply lack confidence to believe the issue would be diagnosed or resolved properly for my benefit, rather the most likely scenario would be a costly recommendation to replace expensive auto parts, to include expensive labor costs.

So. I have joined this site in hopes of being able to resolve the issue. Thank you. Good day.

You could always change out to the other version.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...spoiler-8.html

Or go to the dealer and have it turned off like they do for the JCW stationary spoiler.

The first time this happened was about a year after purchasing the car new. It took three visits to the dealer before they made the repair. I was told that a wire was pinched during assembly. A few years later when the car was no longer under warranty it happened again. I checked it out. What I found was that a wire had broken within the rubber tube running from the body of the car to the trunk lid. This is the same wire which had been repaired by the dealer. I found the fix. No pinched wire, the wire broke from repeated flexing, every time the trunk was opened. I repaired the wire, brown in color, and it's working. If you're careful, you can push the rubber tube through the opening in the body thus exposing the wires.

Wiring fix

So this happened to me this morning. When I backed out of my garage the spoiler came up and stuck there with the “spoiler alert” going off the whole trip to the office. So when I got home I started checking the wire and fuse, etc. (The fuse is F10 in the box by the passenger side foot well by the way). Turned out it’s a severed wire in the rubber tube leading from the quarter panel to the trunk lid, (really thin brown wire). Because of where it is and how tight everything is, it was a pain to reconnect the wire. So I got a heavier gauge wire and used a stiff copper wire to fish it through the tube, then spliced the brown wire to the heavier wire on each end of the tube to make it easier. The spoiler is now operating properly and no more “spoiler alert”. I can’t believe they make this alarm so incessant and no way for you to dismiss it…. If that go on any longer I would go insane…..

And now add me to the list. I've read through this thread and as many others as I could. Looking for any other suggestions please.

Here is what mine does:
Upon start up, the wing is in the full up position. As I drive and hit approx 15 MPH, the wing goes all the way down and then pops back up. This then sounds the 'beep, boop, beep' - incessantly and forever.

What I've done:
  • I checked the brown wire(s) when you open the boot, the rubber hose that comes out of the roof line and in to the trunk lid. I noted that two of those brown wires were frayed and someone placed some tape on that area. I cut them and soldered properly with then shrink wrap. - - - Sadly this did not correct the issue.
  • I took to the dealer for a look. They came back stating the motor and specifically the Hall Effect Sensor on the motor had failed. They wanted a measly $1500 for the motor and then labor and so I told them I'd take three of them. After I clarified I was joking, I told them I would take the car back and try the spare used wing I have.
  • As mentioned, I have a spare R58 active wing. I pulled out the failed one and replaced with the spare. - - - Sadly this did not correct the issue and the same exact issue happened with the used wing. There's a chance both wings have a failed hall effect sensor? No idea how to test this.
  • I checked the fuse, all good
Not sure where else to go on this. Because the motor on both wings seems to be moving the wing up and down until the situation where its up and then bings, Im inclined to think the motor is OK and that possibly there is some issue with any computer that might control it. Does anyone know where the ECU is that controls this wing? Is there an OBD reset that needs to be done?

Any other suggestions? Thank you.

It should be noted that apparently the JCW fixed wing doesn't seem to be available anymore for the R58.

We've had a spoiler mal function during a long trip where we ended up braking down due to some ecu and module issue this after a few horrible hours of beeping sound torture.
In the end we had the entire spoiler assembly replaced and I believe some defective control module. I would need to look at our service record to see what was at fault...

Appreciate the response. I've tried three (3) used wings now all with the same result, a failed hall sensor message on the Foxwell OBD scanner I bought. Also, I noted that there is a Footwell Module Error too. I've read that the footwell module controls a lot of basics in the car (Windows, interior lights, signals and more) and when it fails it can manifest possibly other places too. Im "lucky" that I figured out I have exactly one month till the extended warranty from Mini on the footwell module should be covered. Im hoping that this repair will then fix the wing issue.

Though I would love to hear what your issue was please. Thank you.

Yep the footwell module can cause a bunch of issues. MINI extended the warranty on the FRMs.

For anyone who may come across this later, my issue with the rear wing was a failed "JBE" passenger footwell module/fusebox. Took my dealer a month to find the part at another dealership but alas, my problem is sorted and no more beep-boop-beep constantly down the road! Now on to the next thing - coolant leak!

I would love to have the instructions on this issue as I have been suffering with this alarm for almost a year now. I’ve been pushed around by BMW back and forth on it with no results and told I would have to pay $3000 for an entirely new wing system. PEASE HELP!
