2004 Cooper S Air Conditioning

I noticed last week that the Air conditioning (cooling) on my cooper nolonger works. Blower works, heater works if temperature setpoint it high enough. Just no cooling.

Hooked up my AC manifold gauges and pressure indicated 50/190. Not sure if the Normal?

Could this be just a low charge that adding some refrigerant would solve?
Appreciate any comments.
Ian

Check to make sure your low speed fan is coming on when press the AC button. If not, the resistor on the fan could be shot (causing the AC not to work).

Thank you will check later this week. How difficult a job to replace the fan if that is the problem?

You may not have to replace the entire fan, just the resistor mounted to the fan. I can't comment on the difficulty as I have yet to replace mine (next week). I would assume that the car be placed in front end service mode (remove bumper, bumper brace and pull back condenser and radiator.) There are a plethora of how to vids on YouTube.

Suggest you check out item # 20 in the below thread. There is a good video on the AC and should give you some information on the pressure readings you got. If the fan/resistor was not working there is the chance the system overheated and the freon purged out.

Just realized that I probably didn't post this in the correct forum but non the less, appreciate the help. One of the posts referenced mentioned the test procedure to see if the resistor is bad. If I confirm that and given that it is a 2004, should I just replace the fan or just do the resistor replacement? TYC seems to be a popular choice.

So I got my replacement resistor pack and got it installed yesterday. I need to run some more tests but the AC did not seem to work after the replacement. The resistor was definitely bad before hand so I must ahve had a couple of problems.

Replaced the resistor on the fan on Saturday. Took me longer the first time though. Straightforward project though. Once you get it into service position, you cna gently separate the radiator and fan giving you enough room to remove the resistor pack and slice in the new pack.

Now I both high and low show continuity. I was hopeful that that would fix my air conditioning but no luck.

Although the fan seems to come on correctly, I can't really tell if the A/C is coming on at all. I tried using one of the A/C refill cans just in case it worked but also no luck. The gauge indicted at the high edge of green (25psi) but it really didn't move the entire time I the car with running with the A/C on..

One of the posts indicated that a blown fuse might be the cause. WIll check that out next.

Appreciate any comments as I try yo troublehsoot this.

There is a lot of troubleshooting in the above linked thread that should help you with sorting the AC system. I'm getting ready to do the resistor in the fan and check the system as my AC went out recently as well.

it can be your ambient temperature sensor. check the exterior temp by the tach. if its at something like -30 degrees or something like that than thats your issue.
