CEL - Fan Running - Hard Start

2013 R56 - Completely Stock and just hit 91K

Out of the blue today I notice on my way to work the heat was not hot, luke warm maybe but not hot. Then when I left work (3 hours later) the engine light came on but he heat started working better. Also noticed that the radiator fan was on the entire ride. Called the dealership to bring it in an went about my day.

The car has been driving completely normal.

Made a quick stop at a gas station and shut him down and on restart after 5 minutes had to start 3 times and let a rough idle work it's way out before I could get home. Fan still running the entire time.

Coolant Level in the overflow is above the line, not much but is above the line and there is no excessive heat. Everything in the bay is actually colder than I would expect after 30-40 minutes of driving. Maybe because the fan is always on.

Bringing it in tomorrow, but wondering what kind of bill I might be in for. I do not have a way to read the codes at the moment. Any thoughts??

Thanks in advance. I was not really worried about it until the rough starting.

From your quick description of the issues I have to agree with MiniToBe, I am going through the same thing now on my 2011 with 50k miles.

Ended up being the Tstat. They replaced it under warranty as the part had a high failure rate (I guess). Guy told me it saved me about $1000.00. Kind of shocked that that is what is costs to change a Thermostat in these cars.

Thermostat for this engine is about 125 from ecutuning. It takes about an hour or so. Say 160/hr labor. The job should be no more than 300 or 350! But then again these shops have to make a living!!!!
