P0340/P0341 Cam Shaft position problems.
P0340/P0341 Cam Shaft position problems.
Hi everyone.
A while back I bought a car that wasn't running,
here was my first attempt to get it sorted: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t-problem.html
Didn't have much time after that to work on it.
After I last cleaned up the fuse box under the hood, the car starts every single time, sometimes it takes longer sometimes it will start right away. And since the car is running, I decided to chase down all check engine codes.
The last 2 that I have are P0340 and P0341, they are not both at the same time, it's either one or another. Plus they are accompanied by DSC lights, as a result, the car has no power. (LIMP mode I assume)
Was looking on forums for a possible cause of this, but most of them were solved by replacing the sensor. Bought new sensor, replaced, issue is still there.
Now, before I start tearing down the engine, is there something else that I could check?
A theory that I have is, I assume that car has been overheated at some point, it has a new radiator fan, and radiator had a bigass hole in it. But the engine has good compression. So if it was overheated, I assume that they replaced the head gasket. So maybe, and again this is a theory, they didn't time the engine properly when they did that? Will it even start if say it's off by a tooth or two?
Any ideas and help are very welcome.

I have found that a part that comes in a box is not always 100% perfect. Have you checked the harness that connects to the camshaft sensor? Those codes are both the sensor and the range of the sensor and if not the sensor itself it could be the alignment that goes back to how the thing was made.
Well, considering that both sensors (old and new one) show same errors, I have to assume that the new sensor is working. As per harness, I did visually inspect it and spray some contact cleaner in it but didn't test the resistance of the wires that go to the sensor. If not that I assume will have to open it up and check the timing, have no other ideas.
The problem ended up being a bent pin on the ECU, I swapped ECU, EWS, and key from my other mini cooper and car is working great, pulls strong and starts right up, no codes or anything, guess will have to order new ECU/EWS/Key from eBay.
Thanks for the help!
