service engine light - what does it all mean???

Just had the SES light go on for the first time. driving along minding my own business and BANG the yellow light. so i took it to Autozone but it's too late for one of them to check it (freaking sissies don't want to leave the store with only one employee in it) SO.. to the forums!!!

i've been reading that the light will cycle off after 3 successful diagnostic tests and unless it stays on you don't have a problem~~ or at least don't worry.

SOOOOOO my question is--If the light goes off --a. is there a problem and the light is just off so it doesn't annoy you?? b. does the code stay in the OBD so it can be read at a later date???

another one--- if the battery is unplugged and the ECU is reset does this have any bearing on the SES code/light. ie: will it reset the ses light and codes???

Ryephyle i'd like to hear your .02 on this one.

Update

OBD2 the code in the car and came up with P0170, which is a code for "Engine running too lean, Sensor 1"

the car has gone through about 6 cycles and the light is still lit.

seems a bit odd that i'd be getting a "too lean" code 6K miles into my pulley swap, but hey what do i know

i'm unplugging the battery tonight and resetting the ECU- maybe it's over-adapted itself to the pulley. maybe i've been driving like a pansy and the one time i've really opened it up in the past 3 weeks has shocked it

keep you posted

You might very well be running too lean. A 19% pulley and HAI are definitely pushing more air than that ECU could ever know what to do with. How hard did you push it? In the top end, the 19% pulley will probably run the car a little lean as well as push the thermal and rotational limits of the SC. See what happens if you reset the ECU. Maybe Bisch or someone else with a 19% red. will pop in. If you keep getting the code, it might be time for some new injectors.

Disconnecting the battery will reset the adaptive learn but it will NOT reset the code and turn off the light. It will however set another code that the battery was disconnected.

kapps, it was 2 miles into the drive and it's downhill from the start point.

hadn't tached it above 6000 during the drive, just WOT a couple of times to that point.
i've driven the car much harder from toll booths.

not too worried, unless the light doesn't go out in a few days. then a 3.25 hr drive (one way) to the dealership to fix what's up--assuming they can find anything wrong

I doubt that the 19% has anything to do with the situation. It has never been shown to cause a too lean condition. It does lean it out more at the top end, but not dangerously...

My bet is a faulty o2 sensor. Best to schedule with Gary and not run it too hard til then.

UPDATE

the SES light went off.

I have since reset the ECU--WOW more power again.

i went on a 200 mile trip tonight and NO SES light, i flogged it pretty hard out of toll booths and around slow traffic. i figure the SES must have been a fluke.

Side note--got 33 MPG on the computer (reads about 3 MPG high on mine) --so better gas mileage after the reset of the ECu as well.

if it throws the same code again i'LL take it to Gary.--Thanks Bisch

It's baaaaack!!!
ran fine for 400+ miles no light.
leisurely drive to work yesterday AM and popped back on. Hasn't gone off again yet (took about 10 cycles last time)

i can't figure out why now after 6000+miles with the pulley does it give a lean code.

Maybe its a bad O2 sensor and i should kill a day driving to the dealership and back

or ignore it for 1500 miles until my 10K checkup

My SES & DSC came on few weeks ago. Ran poor at minimal throttle and stalled at idle. I've had a 19 pulley for 9 monthso- code was intake pressure high- I could get it to go off in morning but as soon as i drove a few blocks both lights came back on. MINI said it was due to pulley, CAI etc & would not handle under warranty.Said they thought pressure sensor was faulting buit couldn't guarantee that would fix the problem. Had to pay for new pressure sensor, installation and clearning of codes- $200 but runs fine now.
