Does anyone know if the front brakes on a MCS are 2 piston or 4 piston?

me not know...

but I had a question regarding brake dust...man! these things shed dust like nothing I've ever seen. Only 2 quick trips around town and my rims are filthy! I've got 600 miles on my MCS; does this get better with age? or am I going to have to clean my rims every other day?

None of the above. Single piston calipers. But they have plenty of stopping power!

Isn't it the volume of the piston rather than the number of pistons
that matters????

Yes, you are right that the size of the piston is more important. I do know that this thing stops pretty well because I smoked the brakes during my test drive.

I think the best upgrade I have seen so far are the
brake lines that are out there. I may even do it.

Stainless Steel brake lines certainly look better than the plain stock ones, and do function a little better, but not anything that the average person is ever going to feel when decellerating.

Would like to know the cost of them. Usually around $100-150 for other vehicles if my fading memory is correct.

Stock brakes are great initially but if your driving them hard they start fading quickly.

Heard good things about the Stoptech brakes LINK
but have no first hand experience with them.

I.ve got the same problem. There has to be an aftermarket solution to this. I don't care what they cost but I want some high-tech, low-dust pads. chandlers4@attbi.com

I have had some good success with Ferrodo or Mintex pads improving braking on the track.

Stoptech stuff is SUPER nice and basically bombproof. Never head of anyone using their stuff on any vehicle that had any complaints about Stoptech except for the extreme price. But you get what you pay for.

On my VW GTI, I have only upgraded to higher quality pads and rotors which make a big difference on the track, but it is still a stock set-up and I suffer from serious fade after about 50-75 really hard braking cycles in about 15 minutes.

Unless you plan on spending an extended time on the track heating up the brakes until the glow, you will probably never experience any noticeable fading as regular spirited driving on twisty roads and highways really does not push the stock system to the limits.

Auto-X racers and guys like me who just like to have a little non-competitive time on the road track really do not NEED much of a brake upgrade for their purposes.

That being said, I might tell Santa that a black (NOT RED!) set of Stoptech brakes would be greatly appreciated.

I think I may have a lead on ceramic pads to cut down on dust. Performance Friction (www.nationalfleetparts.com) has a line of ceramic pads for performance cars. Right now the closest they have come to our Minis is the BMW M3. I eMailed them and are aware of our brake dust problem. I guess we have to wait until they come up with aftermarket pads. My contact there is Rich Deary (rdeary@nationalfleetparts.com). Here is what he had to say...

"The ceramic pads should cut down on dust considerably over the stock
pads. I know the pads for the Mini are different from the M3 because
they have a new part number. I don't know when it might be available
though, Performance Friction doesn't have a production date yet."

Do you have a link to where I can find more info on the stoptech stuff? Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is a link where you can see the stoptech stuff. It costs $1695 for the black set and a couple hundred more for the obnoxious red ones.

As I am going to be pulling a trailer very often, these might be a good thing for me. I'll have to find a way to convince my accountant that they are a necessary business expense. . . .

gerbs,

You can find them at http://www.MINI-Madness.com . They actually have a "stage1" kit for brakes that include cross-drilled rotors, pads and the lines. I would go for the lines. Most of us know the drawbacks of cross-drilled rotors, so I may not go that route. I'll ask if they are coming out with slotted rotors. Much better than drilled for longevity reasons.

Randy
