Okay I have been googling this forever and can't find any information. On my 05 r53 when I open my hatch it makes a terrible rattle sound, imagine the door stop springs in your house you played with. Has anyone had this happen to them or have any idea why it's happening?
You ever lube the hinges and the ball joints that the struts connect too?!
Regular lubing of the hinges is in the manual.... They do wear out, and are a pain to change...kinda $$ too...
If the hatch does not stay open, the struts may have failed too....but that is about a $30 fix to replace both....

The struts are new. It sounds like the latch itself is spring loaded and as soon as you open the Hatch it makes the terrible boinging noise. I might have to take the plastic off that's covering it and investigate but I will defintely lube whatever the hell is down there.
Weird, it sounds like just when you pull the door stop springs? I know that sound, vividly. Is it only when you open it and do you not hear it at all when driving? Most of what I'm sure you found was lubrication for the many hatch rattle threads and the "D ring" issue. With that people reported the noise while driving though. I think you're on the right track with inspecting a bit closer while opening and closing as it might help you track down where the source is coming from specifically in the hatch.

Exactly that is all I found and it is definitely NOT that generic trunk rattle everyone talks about. I do have that rattle sound too everything else rattles as well so I haven't tackled that issue yet. Maybe I am the only one with this issue but once I decide to take it apart I'll be sure to post and be the world's first trunk boinging fixing thread. Is there any actual latch mechanism in the Hatch itself or does the d ring connect to the important bits on the actual car?

Reason: Mobile posted before i was done writing
Could be a loose fastener moving around as you open the hatch.
Unlikely to be this exactly, but Years ago I pocketed three range ***** (golf) and they ended up under the seat. They would produce an unnerving clunk-clunk-clunk every time I turned.
Was convinced I had two bad CV axles.
Just have to poke around until you find it.
A strong magnet will attract a steel fastener even through a layer of sheet metal.
Found it. The latch motors cover was popped off just a little causing the motor to be loose and make crazy sounds. I had no idea it was designed like that very interesting.
Trunk latch with cover off, you just gotta pry it till the fittings pop off. The bottom 3 you pull the center out then pry i found that out after i broke one.
The inside under the black plastic case, one of the tabs was loose causing this gear to go crazy, so i reattached. The gold one spins when you press the trunk latch and that spins these black ones in the latch to open it. No more noise!

Must have happened form shutting the rear hatch over time ?
