Chain Tensioner Length?

If my new chain tensioner length is 82mm(Long one), then what should the new dummy tensioner length be? I have tightened the dummy tight, but do not wish to trash my new guide rails. I thought the old dummy length was 68mm, but there is no way you can get the cam on with it that tight. Help.

Sounds to me like you're doing things out of sequence. The tensioner tool should be used AFTER the chain is installed and BEFORE the cam sprockets are tightened. Cam installation procedure is spelled out pretty good in the Bentley manual. Doing it wrong could be catastrophic! Either search this forum for threads explaining the process (risky), or get a Bentley manual (recommended).

^^^

Guides in and tight

Crank and cam bolts loosely assembled so that they still rotate

install tensioner tool, tighten to 6 in lbs

Torque intake cam to 15 ft lbs + 180*

Torque exhaust cam to 15 ft lbs + 90* if N14 or 15 ft lbs + 180* if N12/16/18

Torque crank bolt to 36 ft lbs + 100*

Remove tensioner tool

Install tensioner, torque to 45 ft lbs.
