I've got a persistent issue on my N18 MCS. Are these signs of failing HPFP / In Tank Pump?
1) car is sluggish and not as responsive as before.
2) between 1500/2000 rpm there's always a distinctive jerk when changing gears. It happens during shifting up or down the gears.
3) Issues on point 2 is more prominent when fuel is running low (3/4 tank and below)
I was also told by my workshop that it could be a faulty throttle body issue. No codes have been thrown on the scanners though. So i'm wondering if anyone could give me some advice / explanation.
How many miles does it have and have you ever gotten a carbon cleaning on the valves? Could be that. If it was a HPFP issue or a spark plug/coil pack issue I'd bet more on there being a check engine light.

its currently clocking about 87k. I've done a carbon clean, changed spark plugs and ignition coils. There's never any CEL issues.
In the past i faced irratic idling problems but it's now gone during cold start. And now once in a while i have problems starting the car but that doesnt happen very often.
Not sure if this makes sense to you - I'm cruising on the freeway. At these point of time i'm gasing on the throttle. When i see a car slowing down ahead i release the throttle completely to reduce speed (w/o braking) and when the car ahead of me speeds up and i hit the throttle again THERE GOES THE JERK!
And i also realize it happens between 1.5k to 2k rpm.
N18 doesn't have a throttle body, it has a Valvetonic head. It could be the electric motor that controls the opening of the valves which ultimately controls the throttle. It's difficult to troubleshoot without codes being thrown or some sort of diagnosed being performed on various components to rule them out.

The N18 still has a plastic TB, but typical is always open, except on cold start or when the car car isn't warmed up. On cold start the TB partially closes, and then the valvetronic will take over.
Since there are no codes, it makes me think it's the HFPP.

On an N18 engine, yours required carbon clean ? Bit irregular....never seen an N18 engine requiring this procedure yet....and they've been on the road since the latter part of 2010.
Give the engine a good once over, any signs of fluid leaks/damp areas ?
Some n18 i seen had the carbon cleaning done. It would be a good thing while your cleaning and checking the throttle body to maybe pop off the intake manifold and take a look at the intake side of the head.

Thanks for the headsup, looks Iike it performs similar to an electronic choke.
But dont know if it cover all European MINIs or ones from Singapore, might want to give your local MINI dealership a call there if you go down that road.
Do you guys think the jerk could be a gearbox issue? Or an issue with the diverter valve?
The issue still persist these few days. I don't know how to explain this but it happens when u hit the pedal and when you release it and hit it again it happens.
The gearbox it would be sloop and you would hear wining or clicking. On the diverter valve it would throw a code. Most of the time, pull the diverter valve , is it cracked on the diaphragm ?

Dear Friend. I have the same problem and I don’t find the solution. Could you solve it?.
