Clutch petal problems.

2003 S: I was stop and go driving today, everything was fine. I stopped at a light and as I was pulling away it was getting hard to go threw the gears. I stopped and raised the hood, there was a small amount of smoke rising up from the bottom of the motor. I could smell a burning smell. I checked the clutch/brake fluid reservoir and it was full. Sat for a while, but the car wouldn't go into gear and the petal was on the floor. I had it towed home. Does the clutch go out without warning? Theres no puddle or drips on the driveway. I will have it towed to the shop tomorrow. I was just wondering if anyone of you have thoughts on what it could be? Thank you.

Yes, the clutch can fail completely without warning. Lemme guess, you are at about 130k miles on the original clutch, right?

Hmmm, it should last longer than that, but unfotunately, i dont think it is unheard of. Sry to hear it. The R50 i had failed the same way - it just broke, pedal to the floor. But it was at 130k.

The smell is a give-away. Looks like you need a clutch.

We have some awesome clutch super kits HERE that have everything you'll need and want to replace while you're in there for the job. These kits are great because you might as well make sure that you are replacing and fixing every piece that might need attention, while you have access to it. Let me know if you have any questions.
