Help! Vertical Selector out

hey y'all,

So I am a newbie. I found out my vertical selector Is out on my r53. Can I fix that by replacing the whole shift lug? If so, anyone know a place where I can find those instructions. Tried finding a video online and didn't see anything.

thanks!

Are you referring to the selector lever on the transmission itself?

Maybe... so I had a mechanic look at it and he described it as to get into reverse and 5,6 the vertical selector needs to move up and down and mine doesnt move enough any more to get it into reverse. I think it is just with the actual shifter. I have A LOT of play. like half an inch even when in gear. He adv that I would need to change out the whole assembly. So I am thinking that would just be the Shift Lug.

Shifter lug is here: One unit and has a cable that attached to the top of the transmission.

Looks like this:

The lug itself could be bad, i would take it out and make sure the cable slides freely. If someone by accident spilled a drink on it and sticky soda go it there it tend to stick.

If it has allot of play something might be broken. take the unit out and see what it does on its own when its not connected to the transmission. If it works fine then it could be the transmission.

I think it's the selector lever on the trans or the transmission itself. The shift lug that I'm selling is just that...just the stick in a molded plastic base. It's only function is to connect you to the transmission so you can change the gears. It doesn't actually 'select' the gears, it just moves the cables which in turn move the selector levers/shafts in/on the transmission.

ECS is posting items related to an automatic transmission...I would disregard any future posts by them.

Yeah I noticed they are showing me a part for an automatic transmission... So I will need actual transmission work. gross hahaha. Okay thank you for your help. The guy was saying that he would charge me roughly $600 for parts and labor... might just have to fork up the extra cash. I will try to find more information on the actual selector. I really appreciate your help.

Sorry thought you said automatic , with the the term vertical selector , thinking of the selector switch for automatics .

On the manuals side when the lug sticks its usually the cables. Not see a bad lug that often. There are two lugs used. One is black and the other is nylon in color. Condition A and Condition B for certain years, some years they just had one type.

Pull up your shiftier boot and look at the top of the lug, if its nylon, its this.

The transmission shifter on the top of the manual transmission looks like this and when its .

It pivots and selects the gear when you push the lug / shift **** , which in turns pushes the selector on top into gear. These pivot points can rust ( outside) , stick as they are exposed to the outside elements , mine stuck on my R52, hit it with some PB blaster and its started to pivot again. there are about 4-5 pivot points on that section . If they are not the issue and looks ok , it might be an internal gear or adjustment in the transmission.

My car has the black one. I honestly think this is what I need. I will take it apart here in a few days and make sure. The guy who looked at it just said a new assembly so I don't know if it will be as far as the transmission... At least that is what I am hoping for. Thanks for the reply and the pictures.

Sure will. Hope to get some time to take a loot at it this weekend. Looking at the quote from the mechanic I am pretty positive that is all I am needing.

Show the mechanics this thread and shop around on indy shops. Some BMW indy shops might know MINI , if you cant find just a MINI based one.
