So I'm looking ast buying a used 2002 cooper S with 38k miles. Very clean car. The only prob i see with it is that the odometer display has stopped displaying. The owner said it just stopped displaying about 3 weeks ago. The ecu still records the miles just the odometer display doesn't. Has anyone ever heard of this? easy fix or expensive? Thanks for the help!

 

Completely blank, stopped? Is there an orange color dot near the display ?

 

sounds like 14+ years of heat and cold killed the electronics....check your fuses, etc, but bet vibration, corrosion, age, etc took their tolls....might be worth checking the plugs, but bet its done.
A junkyard unit will give you a MILEAGE MISMATCH... the correct miles is stored in 3 places...
only way to fix it 100% is to replace with a new unit...the old miles input into a new unit fro a set period....
a used one will work but miles shown will be wrong.

 

Hello, i am currently having this issue and was wondering if you could help. mine is just an orange color and i’m afraid that if i replace it the correct mileage will not show up and my nearest MINI dealer does not like to answer the phone or ever call back if i leave a message.

 

The tach can be replaced, no reprogram. Its the Speedometer (center mount) that if replaced it needs to be new and has to be reprogramed by MINI at the MINI dealer, they did mine.

 

I actually have the chrono and nav package so my speedometer and tachometer are together on my steering column.

 

yep, they you need the two Mickey Mouse ears and they have to be coded. I guess you could transplant some of the screen and stuff but don't think that would fix it. I can get you the part number if i know the year and if it has chrome line interior or not.

 

it’s a 2002 cooper s and no i don’t believe it has the chrome line interior. also do you know in these older generation coopers is the mileage stored in the ecu or dme, or am i supposed to know how many miles are on it since it stopped working.
