Clutch question

I have never driven a stick before I purchased my MCS and I remember the dealer saying seomthing about wearing out the clutch in about 8 -12k. And then it needing to be replaced or seomthing like that. I am close to 15k with mine and nothing has happened yet, and if it does need to be replaced when should I do it, will I know when it needs to be replaced? And how much does it cost, is it under warranty?

If you drive a clutch correctly and don't race or overslip slip it, then it should last 100k miles or more. Your dealer is crazy if he thinks a clutch should only last 15k miles. It is expensive to replace as the transmission has to be removed and invlolves several man hours. As for warrenty, BMW is possibly the only manufacture that does warrent clutch replacement and if you do wear it out within the warrenty period, they will replace it. When a clutch does begin to wear out, you will notice it still slipping when you are off the clutch (most noticeable in 1st gear) and accelerating. Also, the throw-out bearing can wear down, causing the clutch operation to be sticky and not very smooth.

I think your dealer probably wanted to say 80k-120k miles.

If you don't smell a burnt clutch when you engage, you are not
prematurely wearing it that much even if you did slip it.

This is incorrect (at least in my experience including discussions directly with MINI warranty reps). MINI will replace a worn clutch (as long as there are no signs of ABUSE) during maintenance - NOT warranty. Under warranty, MINI WILL Replace a failure of a clutch part - such as the clutch fork which happened in my case but clutch WEAR is NOT covered under warranty. It's only covered under maintenance (under 36k miles).
