I found the dtc!!!!!!!

Ok so I was on my way up to Bloomsburg with the wife today and I got the code
P0300 $07E8

I went on to list the 2nd and 3rd cylinder and went into half power mode. I was not in a place where i could pull over for the next few miles so I had to drive a bit.....well...it started flashing. Having the scanner still plugged in I ran another test... this time I saw it read misfires on all cylinders and started slowing way down. I pulled over needless to say and the car was at a rock steady idle. Tiny bit high but still...no shuddering, hesitation, shaking etc., Desperate to get to where i needed to go...I saved the data on my computer and cleared the code. The car ran fine. Now that I am at Bloom....I am in the library researching some ways to diagnose whats causing the misfire. I am trying my best to use the kiss method (Keep it Simple Stupid).
- Spark Plugs?
- O2 sensors?
- Coil packs?
Also this light came on after about a solid hour and 10 min of highway driving. I was getting about 33-35mph too.

Anyone have this problem before? I have limited time here at the University so I figured I would post about it and then research on here to see if anyone has had that problem.

Sorry that I cannot tell what year/model you have but I can share that my 2012 Justa was a mess with all kinds of issues due to a marginal battery. I got it running with a jump start from AAA and figured all was good as it idled fine and under light load all was OK.

I never got the codes but my dash went 'blank', engine was a mess over 2.5K RPM and all in all it was running like crap for the duration of my ride home from work. I kept going figuring each mile was one less on the tow truck.

Massaged it home and figured given the issue started with the battery I'd start there. Changed it out, reset the clock and it's been fine since. I know modern cars with weak batteries act odd but this was a whole new level for me. From now on the battery will be a maintenance item.

I have a 2011 R57 MCS with the N18 engine. Out to dinner right now (took the truck). I plan on elaborating on the subject when the wife and I get back home. I even have pics of the codes and plugs I took out.

It could be the high pressure fuel pump. If you can monitor fuel rail pressure using a smart phone app that can help diagnose.

Yes! I have read that too. Can you elaborate on the tolerances the HPFP needs to be within?

The hunt for the P0300 cause

Ok! I made it home with no trouble actually. Here is how today went.
I was on the road with my wife to Bloom and I got the half engine power light. Luckily I brought my scanner with me and hooked it up while driving. I scanned and it spit the P0300 codes out to me that you see below. Car said it was find to drive but moderate my speed, so I did. About 10min went by when the actual CEL light on the speedo lit up and blinked at me. I ran the code again. This time around it was all cylinders and the car slowed waaaay down.
I ended up pulling over to read this and think things through.

My wife was a key note speaker at a conference at Bloomsburg University today and we needed to go just 4 more miles. Desperate, I saved the data and cleared the codes and off we went. I decided that if it happened again on the way home I would call AAA and have her flat bedded home.

I normally don't do this but during this time (the trip up) I had cruise control on and was getting great gas mileage at about 75mph. Was about to get off the highway and boom, that's when it happened...about 100miles.

From the time I cleared the codes and to the time I got to our garage door...well over 100 miles. About 120miles my wife says. And to be honest. the car performed like a champ! Rock steady idle at/around 500-800rpm acceleration was/is great, could hear the turbo spooling up and acting normal. Was like the 1st time I ever drove her :D

Now...the last time I got a light with half power I didn't have a scanner to tell what the code was so I have no idea if the code was a P0300 or not. All i know is that I was almost to where I needed to go anyway and shut the car off and by the time I got back into the car....it was fine...it cleared.

Since that time (about a week ago from today 10.24) I cleaned the plugs and ordered new ones. The one I cleaned and scrapped were pretty dirty but I got them to look pretty new. So I put them back in and this is what I got below.

Before I load those. My plan of attack is as follows:
  • Change Spark plugs with the new ones that came in the mail the other day.
  • Pull vanos’ and clean them 117-18
  • Pull intake manifold and reinstall stock air box and stuff 130-50 while checking for carbon build up.
  • Crank sensor? 120-9
  • Since I have low milage (technically low mileage about 45K) get a fuel inject and carbon build up cleaner for the car. maybe do the old fashioned thing and scrub them myslef
  • Coil pack replacement?
  • HPFP replacement?

I am trying to keep it simple and stupid. Please let me know if anyone has any input or if anyone has been through this. BTW, the numbers above are my book marks for the bentley manual I have on hand.

Cylinder the plugs came out of are noted.

Let the fun begin

With misfires on all cylinders a bad batch of fuel, or low octane fuel is always a consideration.

Definitely change the plugs, probably the most likely cause

Missing Hose under intake manifold?

So I found this as I was just now doing some investigative work. It is under the intake manifold, I am guess its a part of a vacuum pump (separate from the vacuum pump booster that goes to the brakes/brake booster)

I tried feeling around inside the opening with a small zip tie so I don't hurt anything and it feels like it hits a wall unless there is a check valve there or something. This was an unexpected find so I will have to do a little more research if that is the vacuum pump and what all is supposed to be connected to it.
Here are the pics. Any insight is helpful! BTW this is a 2011 MCS N18 Engine

I think that may be unlikely in this situation. 93oct from a Sunoco that is not that old and right off of a main road in the suburbs of philly.

However, I did replace the plugs just now and checked out the vanos solenoids. Exhaust one looks fine. Hell I even have a small camera that I put into the valve cover....everything looks like good. No evidence of coolant in the oil either.

Did you have a open intake installed? Sometimes the MAF can get dirty/oily. Clean it with a little MAF cleaner can be helpful.

just got done looking at that, I am trying to get to the intake vanos which is a B of a location. I do have an open element intake (K&N) mass air flow looked fine.

the intake vanos tho. From what I can see with my camera i use for home duct work stuff haha (thing is coming in handy), it looks a bit dirty on the outside and some possible oil leakes. I wish it were easier to get to like the exhaust one.

update

Intake Vanos is too much of a pain the *** to get to so I moved on to other things. I will deal with that when I remove the intake manifold to take a look at the intake valves another day. Time to move on with the plan of keeping this simple and stupid.

I did find a Crank positioning sensor protective cover that was broken and half off. Meaning the sensor plug is exposed....but I doubt that cover even protects it from water and other grit that fell out of there when I took it off the rest of the way.

welp, time to install the stock air box back on (removed to try and get to the intake vanos) lower her down and start it up and drive it like normal. Time will tell if the codes will come back.

Back and out on the street

So everything went back together and took it for a test drive and came back. I ran a scan and actually got a green check LED light on my scanner. Seems to drive fine and so i left the scanner hooked up to capture some live data. I am going to download it to the computer tonight to do some analytics and see if anything is out of tolerance (HPFP, O2 sensors etc)

For now, driving it like normal!

OEM Tolerances??

So I sitting here, few beers deep, and I am looking at this live data I recorded but the thing is....none of this is going to mean anything to me unless I have manufacturer specific tolerances /acceptable ranges to compare it to...I think. At least that would be the easiest. Anyway...here is the data I collected at idle with a few minor revs.

Update

So another day driving her like normal and everything seems fine. I recorded some data this afternoon to keep an eye on things and even entered into Mode 6 data to take a look at the misfire count. If I can remember correctly the misfire count on:
- Cylinder 1: 0
- Cylinder 2: 2
- Cylinder 3: 4
- Cylinder 4: 1
Max number provided in the scan tool was 15,000 which I think 2.5% is the limit before a code is thrown. That would bring it to mid 300s. Well within tolerance now. Keep in mind. Any engine will have a misfire here and there. I drove home from the train station and had even less misfire counts when I got home.

According to the data, things are looking good so far... KNOCK ON WOOD!
