Check engine light issues (R55)

My 08 Justa Clubbie has started to throw the check engine light. It does so about 15 seconds after start up. I've checked for active and pending trouble codes and nothing comes up. I clear the light and then drive as normal and it does not come back on until I start it again. This morning it came on as I pulled out of the garage. With the car in neutral I cleared the light and the car kind of "thunked" (sorry, hard to describe the actual feeling but it was almost as if I back into something) but continued to run fine. I stopped the engine and then restarted. Light came on again. Cleared it and the same thing happened again. Afterwards I drove to work as usual and the check engine light did not come on again.

Possibly unrelated to the above, but I plugged my Ultragauge in yesterday and took the car for a long drive to see if I could determine what was going on. I noticed the coolant temp was unusual. It warmed up and got up to 224F which concerned me (my R53 never gets above 197). I think the thermostat must have opened at that point because it quickly dropped to 188 and stayed there until I turned back into my neighborhood. At that point it started climbing back up and got to 220. I let it idle in the garage for a bit and it stayed at 220.

Anyone have any ideas? Possibly a bad temp sending unit? I have recently replaced the thermostat housing (2 yrs ago) and water pump (last year). Coolant is fairly new and at the right level. With no code, I'm kinda lost as to what to look for. Any help is appreciated.

Not all generic tools are able to pull up the codes being thrown. I believe you may need a BMW specific tool or need to go into a shop and have them read it. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong). Pull that code and it'll help determine what the issue is, if it's related to the temperature or not.

Sounds like a stumble or something, the MINI dealership can scan the MINI and read more into the trouble codes, some codes dont show up on the actron and other scan gauges.

220F is quite normal for the R56 series of cars.

The N14 engine in the hotter months runs at 226F, quite normal.
