03 mcs grinding noise and overheating

03 mcs, 98k miles

so i overheated my mini pretty badly the other day on the way to a cars and coffee. on the highway there, my buddy called me to tell me my car was shooting coolant at him. sadly my phone was on silent....so drove about 20 minutes on the highway and pulled off the exit on my way to C&C, at a stop light noticed the car was loosing power... looked at the temp gauge(spiked all the way to the top) and yep she was overheating so pulled her to the side. opened the hood smoke everywhere and fizzing from the coolant tank.

towed it back to my place did a compression test and my readings were cyl #1 110-115 cyl #2 120-125, cyl#3 125, and cyl #4 was 125-130. sorry for not having on accurate readings i need a better compression tester but ya so the motor seems like it didnt damage it too bad but these numbers do seem low and cyl 1 scares me a little.

filled her with coolant since most of it came out of the resevoir when she overheated. bled the system. and took her out for a drive. car has a very loud grinding noise when you accelerate. it will overheat if i keep driving. i have a obd2 reader/gauges hooked up to it and it started reading 240-250 and i turned her off.

my question whats this grinding noise? water pump maybe considering its overheating as well? also does that mean parts in the supercharger could be bad too?

anything helps
Thanks!!!

sounds like a water pump

sounds like it is likely the water pump probably the bearing went bad or the impeller came loose on the inside. It could possibly be the drive from the supercharger to the water pump but that is much less common.

Had one go bad on my 03 and replaced it myself. Put the front end in service mode and removed the supercharger. Change the oil in the supercharger and change the thermostat while you are in there. I would look at the hoses and consider changing them on an 03 while your at it.

Okay then I'll be ordering the water pump and thermostat tomorrow. Thanks guys! How do those compression readings look? Just got rid of my 04 mcs for a 2014 ford fiesta st. Best descision ever made. Looking like I'll be trading this mini in or selling it as well. :( time to move on. I just can't deal with all these mini problems anymore. Fun cars but out of the 20 I've owned definitely the worst reliability wise.

Anyway to tell the superchargers water pump drive is still okay? Would hate to put it all back together with a new water pump and have the problem show right back up.

With the SC removed, open up the drain plug and look inside. If it looks good, then refill with the correct fluid (mentioned elsewhere on NAM)

When you have the SC out, replace the sensor behind it (I forget if it's a knock sensor or what).

I'm sure ESC will pipe in with the proper part...
