horn will not shut off R58

I was replacing the trim on my JCW steering wheel. I was not able to fully remove the airbag. For some reason i was only able to loosen the left side but enough to replace the trim on the center spoke of the wheel. I hook everything back up and the horn is now stuck. I have now redone this 4 times with either the horn stays on or will come on when i touch anywhere on the wheel. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? This is on a 2012 R58 and i have had the JCW wheel on since the car was a week old.

thanks for any help....

The steering wheel has to be set right with the airbag. I will use the GP2 steering wheel for reference. Same general shape behind the airbag, just much thicker on the grip wheel the the stock JCW wheel.

First make sure you have the battery disconnected as you don't want to trip the airbag light.

Make sure the spring is in place wheel you remove the airbag and the two wire are disconnected. This is what the spring looks like. and the blank pads com on the steering wheel , if you have the cruise and volume coltrol the pads are in the same place. But this shows you how the pads are flush with the wheel.

When you took out the airbag, you push a tool, small phillips or flathead throught that hole on the bottom which realeses the back tabs on the airbag.

My guess is the spring cam out a bit when you pressed up on it. Or the trim piece are not flush, the top left and right pads screw into the wheel which screw on the back, see pics.

Check you wheel and airbag.

Here is the back of the airbag, make sure the clips are not broken and the spring in place and its aligned right.

Thanks

thanks for the pictures. if i could remove the airbag i would. i am only able to loosen one side of the airbag module. both sides will loosen, just not together. i was finally able to put everything back without the horn continually on. however one i close the hood the horn does toot? for a brief second. that makes me wonder if i still have a problem somewhere.

You are welcome, bet the spring is binded on the airbag clip. Its hard to see but if you can get a light in there and make sure the airbag is clipped in all the way for safety, on those four peg grips. Might want a MINI dealership to look at it for safety.

I would ask them to take a quick look at it, so you will be ok. Let them know your issues. They might have you come by.

Thanks and hope that helps.

thanks ECS, i was finally able to remove the airbag. The retaining clips on one side were not releasing fully. I think this may have caused the airbag module to not sit correctly and was causing the horn to go off. It does seem to be working correctly now.
