Incorrect Odometer Due to Speedometer Readings

Has anyone gone to the dealership to get the odometer fixed due to how far off it is? Technically all our MINIs odometers are reading high because the speedometer is so far off, right? Aside from people who've gotten taller wheel/tire combos

And no....a dealer cannot "back up an odometer" legally......

^ they can if it's a recall, but MINI isn't too good about that anyway.

just curious, how is the speedo off but not the odometer? search wasn't my best friend here.

if you go to a part of highway with certified mile markers you will find the odometer is dead on. My digital MPH is off by 1 and the analog dial off by 2 mph .

LAWS require speedo to NEVER read slower than actual so manf error on the safe side. Most MC's including mine are off by 4-5 mph , but odo must be accurate.

One tip....
The odometer is not magical..... It is based off the number of tire revolutions.... Same as the speedo....

well ever since digital dashes very simple, software. Now back in the 60,70's when it was pure analog it was all in one so both could be off but not anymore.

Use a gps app to verify your ODO if in doubt.

this is what i thought, thank you.

subaru had to have this recall done i believe, dont remember the details, but it did involve fixing the odometer. I don't really care per se, just go with taller tires next go around, but still.

As mentioned, the speedo is electronically compensated to read a hair high, the ODO is accurate.

With the STOCK SIZE rims.....deviate from them...and they are both off even if you go into the computer and turn it off.... There have been suggestion to get bigger tires to reduce wheel gap or correct the speedo...can get messy fast if one is OCD about the speedometer/odometer readings being accurate.....heck 75%+ of mini owners use non OEM tire sizes in my experience....

With oem sized tires*, my speedo reads 3-5 mph slower than actual vehicle speed, but the odometer
is pretty damn spot-on.

*actually, 175/65/15 or 195/60/15 or 205/50/16.
the first is an oem size, and the other two are 1% over and 0.5% over the first size in diameter.

interesting - i wonder how it's exactly measured then? or measured accurately before the speedo is adjusted, and then the speedo is dropped down? if that's the case, simply moving tires up in height to match up speed will underestimate the odometer

Yup, that's the size of it.

If you read the speed off the OBD2 bus, you'll find it matches your GPS a lot more closely... At least, it does on my car.

odometer

Sorry to drag up an old thread....has anyone else checked the odometer for accuracy. I have known about the Speedo issue which is has been off in both of our Coopers. I have never owned or driven another car with such large discrepancy. I can live with it though because I love the driving experience. I have checked the odometer against mileage markers multiple times and can always see an error reading on the high side. I checked the tenths of miles on the trip meter as I pass the marker. After a few miles you can see the mileage clicking off a bit quicker. This is unacceptable as it relates to warranty and resale value. This is with OEM tires and OEM sized replacements. Time to buy some slightly oversized tires I guess.

2014 195/55-16: Odometer 41.2 miles vs. GPS 41.6 miles. -1.0%

Given that a 195/55-16 tire diameter shrinks by 1.7% over the life of the tread I don't think there's a lawsuit here.

It is my understanding that will not correct the speedometer, only the digital display in the tach.

Actually, if your new tires have the same OD as the old tires, the odometer will read the same. That's the whole idea behind "+1" tire sizing.
