Auto gearbox help

Hi guys, been lurking for a while and finally signed up to this great forum. I have a 2009 cooper clubman auto and have recently been experiencing a problem with the transmission.
When the car is in 'D' it intermittently flicks between 'D' and 'DS'. When it does this, it quite rightly drops down a gear, but as I haven't selected 'DS' this is pretty annoying. It happened all the time for a few days and then, for no apparent reason was fine for about a week and now it's started again. It's almost like it has a mind of its own switching between the two different gearbox modes. When it's in 'D' and not flicking about the transmission works fine.
I have searched the net and found a couple of owners posting about the same problem but there doesn't seem to be an explanation. Is there anyone else out there who has had a similar problem or any Mini technicians who can explain what's going on here? Many thanks in advance.

It sounds like a faulty sensor inside the gear stick housing, which engages manual shifting when in D and moving the stick to the left into D/S. I would try taking it apart and seeing if there might just be something loose or broken, because I don't see any separate parts on realOEM. It's just sold as one unit, which appears to be around £500

Long shot but maybe a bad sport button? Does it ever say 'sport' when switching back and forth?

Hi. It doesn't have a Sport button as such. To go from auto to DS which is in effect the Sport and Manual mode you just push the shifter to the left. I was thinking something like that, but haven't a clue where to start looking

So there's no sport button on the gearshift boot area? Sorry, just assumed it was there.

No Sir. To put it in sport mode I simply push the shifter to the left. If I want I can then tap it up or down a gear like tiptronic
