I have read just about every thread on rattles that there is on this forum with out any luck at fixing the rattle just above my head when the sunroof was closed. The only way I could get it to stop was to keep it up in the back or close it in steps and hope it would not make noise.
Last weekend I finally fixed it. It turns out that there is a metal panel that is raised at the back of the sunroof (on the body below the sunroof and above the headliner). This panel and the metal at the rear of the sunroof are in very close proximity when the sunroof is closed. Being in close proximity along with flexing/stiff suspension/crappy roads/etc were causing the two panels to contact one another and noise ensued.
All I did was clean the panel and put a couple of strips of felt on it so the sunroof will not contact it. Drove it this morning and no noise or rattle. Very happy.
I attached some photos of the inside of the sunroof as well as the sunroof itself. In the sunroof pics look at the beam that runs along the underside of the roof. Look at the inside of the roof and you can see the felt that I put in.
The beam on the underside of the sunroof is about 50mm from the rear edge of the roof. If you measure from the rear edge of the opening, at about 60mm there is a metal extrusion that has the felt on it.
It is hard to get good photos of the inside of the roof. Hopefully you can see what I am talking about.
Hi Mike
I have the same problem but I cant figure out where should I place the strips of felt on it from your photos.
Is it the edge of the sunroof?
pls find the photo attached.
Where would it be located, see my modified pic: red (metal panel), blue (raised metal panel), purple (rubber gasket?) or the interface between blue and purple (a bit of raised metal before the gasket?)? Looks like the interface between those 2 colors as there seems to be some frayed material there, maybe?
UPDATE: I was asked to clarify what I did to solve the rattle. Here are a few more photos showing what I did.
I added some high density foam about 1/2" thick x 3" long x 1/2" wide in two locations on the ledge below the back edge of the sunroof so that it contacts the sunroof when it is closed. I also added some 'fuzzy side' velcro to the backside of the flaps at the front of the sunroof opening. I hope that the photos show this clearly.
This has been installed for almost 10 years and show the wear, but are still working.
Good for you and thanks for posting. I've been getting a horrible rattle when it's cracked open. Actually, it's been there as long as I've owned it and haven't bothered to look into it. I need to take a look the next I'm at the car.
