2008 Cooper - CEL P1062 - VVT Limp Home Request Full Stroke Position Reached (Bank 1)

2008 Cooper. It's been cold recently (-25C) and the CEL came on after a brittle morning start up. We checked for codes, got P1062, reset, but it came back.

P1062 - VVT Limp Home Request Full Stroke Position Reached (Bank 1)

What does this mean!? I can't find anything specific online.

MINI sounds and drives okay. It goes into limp mode after cold sart-up (with half shaded CEL) but runs fine when warmed up (regular CEL).

Started the car this morning (another -25C), it reved up and dropped to zero. Tried to restart, was hesitant and didn't sound right. Half shaded CEL.

Any ideas before going into the shop?

Thanks Coop-a-Loop.

We brought the MINI into our heated work shop for a few hours to try and thaw. We tested the battery and charge is good. Afterwards we took it for a good drive as most of my friends driving is short commutes in cold weather.

The CEL went out by itself and the car has been fine, until the other morning (again, -25C weather). Right now he's letting it warm up with a half shaded CEL and restarting to drive on the regular CEL. Limp mode in rush hour is brutal!

No signs of it warming up here anytime soon.

I can't be sure, but this sounds like one of (or the) the cam phasing solenoids is not moving off the full travel position.

I don't know if your engine has more than one solenoid; I know your intake cam has phase control, but am not sure it the system uses one or two solenoids for the control,..

Check the solenoid inlet "last chance screen" for debris. I know the "S" engines have a bad habit of depositing metal shavings there if you happen to starve the engine of oil.... Not sure how the Justa engines behave there...

Also; how old is the oil? Ancient oil at -25C will NOT flow well. Even good clean, new synthetic oil starts to slow down below -10 C.
Good Luck!
E .

I found this thread from last year and was shocked to see that I had the exact same experience just this week. Background - 2008 Justa Automatic, 122k miles. I'd recently installed an Ultra-Gauge in to monitor water temp (among other things). Weather has been very frigid here in NH the last 2 weeks, and 2 storms dumping 1-2 feet of snow each. Car lives outside. I try to start and run it at least 2-3 times a week. Most all winter it's started right up with no issues.

This week, I started it up and got a CEL with the driver info center saying that there was an issue, with varying descriptions (reduced power, emissions problems, etc). The Ultra-Gauge gave me the trouble code - P1062. I've read about the code and what it could mean in this thread (and other places). Driving the car around the block in "limp mode" was interesting, to say the least.

So I brought the car into my semi-heated garage (about 40 degrees) and let it sit for a few hours. Snow melted off, car got to a reasonable temp. Started it up and it was if there was never a problem. No error code or CEL any longer. I drove it today and yesterday and it's driving great. So I'm thinking this has to do with cold weather, and not necessarily an issue with the car itself.

Someone speculated that older oil not flowing as well at very cold temps might be a contributing factor. For me, the oil was changed by the dealer when I got the car in July, and since then I've put maybe 800 miles on it. I'm hopeful that the dealer used mini oil, but not 100 percent sure. I might just do an oil change and put some full-syn in with a new filter and see if the behavior changes. When you look into the oil fill hole things look pretty clean with no sludge build up....

Interesting...
