Misfire / Stumbling

I have a 2004 S with small pulley and K&N Intake.

I developed a misfire some time ago when accelerating hard - car stumbles very badly. I improves somewhat when I lift off the throttle a little and once past about 4000rpm it goes well. It will rev to the limit. There are no engine lights on and dealers tell me that no fault registers on the computer.

I have had numerous garages look at it without success. I just replaced the plugs (NGK R), leads and coil to a "Screamin Demon" high output coil - still no better.

At one point a dealer said that I ran the oil low one time and that doing so messed up the valve lubrication (permanently)... Is that a reasonable explanation?

Is there something else that might actually be fixable?

I'm in Eastern MA - is there a place locally that might be able to assist?

Thanks!

Bill

Could be a dying fuel pump or fuel filter.

If it were fuel related, I would expect to be unable to get to maximum revs...

i would check the plugs, make sure they are properly sat and double check they are the right plugs for your setup. then check the wires to make sure they arent damaged and are tight. check the leads on the coil pack for corrosion. and it would hurt to run a couple bottles of fuel injector cleaner or lucas through your next tank of gas.

thatd be the cheapest way to start in my opinion.

and of course only run 93 octane gas. not everyone does, but thats whats best for the car.

maybe some steel wool, or a scotch pad. little bit of pb blaster to provide a cleaning agent.

then after its clean, if youve got some, you could apply a little bit of dielectric grease to the lead to slow the reoccurance of the corrosion.

Eastern mass= Greasy's garage http://www.greasysgarage.com/main/ in Worcester...more central....but they know the gen1 VERY well...I drive an HOUR from NH to to have them work on my MINI when something needs to be done I do not want to DIY.

I'm guessing it is due to low compression....
At low rpms, the compression is iffy....but as the pistons move faster...the air has less time to leak out...could be from wear or even the "valvetrain" issue you mention from low oil. I'm sure a good mechanic can look at stuff more closely!!
