2010 Non-Turbo with P0012 error code

I know that the timing is off, and with 110000 miles I get the cold rattle, rough idle, RPM drop when braking hard and so on, since the summer.
I ordered all the necessary replacement parts to do the job myself, including the special tools needed. I first thought that its just the timing chain tensioner, but after replacing it I still get the check engine light.

I did a lot of reading and have come to the position that due to the miles driven, the amount of oil these little motors consume, along with the recommended oil change intervals of 15k by MINI (I stopped this and use 5k to 7.5k intervals instead, probably too late) that the chain and guide rails are worn.

I will post my findings as I get this project underway, and hope to share mi experience and insight.

Ok, I did the work but still getting the same code. I made sure the crank and cams were timed correctly, everything went back to specs. I starting to think this is a sensor issue.

MINI, did a diagnostic, and re adapted the computer to the new parts installed. The code still came back, but miraculously its gone after a week of driving. I also replaced the intake Vanos solenoid.

just popped the same on my 2008 un-turbo did it earlier this year once after i put cheap gas in it, cleared but came back tonight. Still seems to run ok, so will be gentle and take care of it after the holiday. 47 degrees out tonight too, maybe that scared it. Although i want it checked for sure this time since its a repeat issue
