another good website for upgrades is http://www.mini-madness.com
they have several upgrades for both the cooper, and cooper S... I'm just not sure they have too many for the engine. You should check it out though!

The Works conversion package will consist of a reworked head and supercharger along w/ a new exhaust to attain the 200HP. Sounds like they found there can be improvements to the head and sc...no wonder there's only a 50HP increase from the base at almost 12psi of boost. Should be a nice setup, tho I'm not sure if they'll provide the head and sc or, most likely, you send them yours and they rework them for you and send it back.

Yes any one ordering a mini throu a official dealer can get it fitted on their for a little more than 2400 british pounds and for just over 2000 pounds if you bring it into Johnny's garage. The dealer is surpossed to know how to do this because it comes with official warrenty! No you don't lose your head it is replaced with a new one. Don't know if that is on trade in base thou. For your cooper it is already their and for the S it's their this fall! Think it's the only thing you can do without risking your warrenty?!

So, does that mean it will be available in the US via the Mini Dealers? It may be more supported in Europe since he's local there and can work easily w/ the Mini dealers around there. 2400 pounds is about $3500USD...that sounds like enough for the conversion to come w/ new parts w/o the need for a core, but since it's factory backed (which to me means ridiculously high prices), it may require a core charge...that would suck...then it's $3500 for modifying the head and sc you already have...I'd much rather receive new units so that I still have the originals if I wanted them, to either keep or sell. Still, 200bhp w/ factory reliability is sweet.

Funny you should mention this. Below is the email I received today from John Cooper Works regarding this very issue:

Date: 6/12/2002 09:12:46 +0100
From: "John Cooper Works" <works@johncooper.co.uk>
To: "Mark Ferguson" <mferguson@minicooperonline.com>

Subject: Re: Works upgrades for US market

We will be marketing our conversion in the states early in the New year.
We will post the details on our website as it becomes available

http://www.johncooper.co.uk

Best regards

JCW

Yeah, they weren't extremely informative either when I contacted them. They gave me an ETA for US market, but I forgot when it was...probably about the time they told you. They only told me that it would consist of a "reworked" head and sc, along w/ a new exhaust system.

I have ordered a cooper S and enquired about the works conversion at my local dealer and they said that they could fit it but that it would void the 50,000 / 5 year warranty that they throw in for £100. I'd been interested to see what difference this would make to the insurance group too which over in the UK is 15e out of 20 before any upgrade!
