I was just wondering if I had to detach the intake hose from the air box, or if it had enough play to wiggle the top of the box off the hinges with it still attached.

That's all.

You can wiggle it. Its easier getting it off than putting it back on, but you will get it

YAY! I took one look at the chintzy clamp on the hose and thought fer sher I'd be replacing it if I had to remove it.

I'm either cheap or lazy. I'm going with the latter.

I have the BMP Intake. It comes with a replacement screw-type clamp for the stock clamp to the airbox - and it has certainly made my life easier (for various reasons, I have had to swap between the stock and the BMP intakes several times).

Life's too short to mess with a cheap clamp. Upgrade.

That stock clamp is actually very good. It works fine, can be reused quickly and fits fine without having alot of extra hanging out like a screw on universal clamp.

At first I thought the same as you and replaced it with a screw on clamp but then when I had my throttlebody upgraded the garage I went to reused the original clamp and it looked stock even though I had that upgrade installed. Neat.

The trick is to use a large pliers to bring the two ends together just right and it clicks onto itself. If you need some guidance talk to eric at Helix13. 1=877-HELIX13. It isn't as hard as it looks and it is free to reuse the OEM clamp.

exercise your mechanical skills.

I had the exact same problem and tried the same hand gouging solutions. What finally worked, as already noted above, is to get a large set of pliers and be sure they aren't worn down. If they still have an edge to them, they will grab the ends and pull them together easily. After 1 hour of messing with it, once I had the right tool it worked the first time.

Once my hand heals ( ) I'm going to try the dual pliers technique... maybe. I'll have to be in a very placid mood, methinks. Otherwise I fear the pliers may take flight.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone.

There are essentially two clamping options - one requires the use of a specialized tool (or a large, sharp set of pliers), lots of care (to avoid hand-gouging), and a bit of time to learn how to do it right. The other requires a flathead screwdriver and 5 seconds of time. The second option also comes off in virtually no time.

For me, this is not a close call. I'm not really interested in figuring out how to manipulate a large set of pliers to avoid gouging my hand, when my existing knowledge of a hand-safe screwdriver will do.

Call me old-fashioned.

I'll chance the hand injuries I hate it when a mechanical menace tries to beat me.

Dash the bloody clamp.... it will click or die...."methinks".

Ms Toast, you shoulda listened to Yucca Patrol and avoid those scraped fingers. It takes a little effort but the air box cover can be lifted up for you to remove the older air filter. Don't be afraid and think that you might break something.

And yes, those clamps are flimsy (I broke one). And yes again, you can go buy a hose clamp with the screw. But get a fairly wide one so that it doesn't cut into the rubber hose.

Those clamps are a PITA. I'm switching to normal hose clamps.

I use a small pair of channel-locks and a shot of penetrating oil. I've had mine on and off about 6 or 7 times now. Oil is the secret.
