Misfires & Ignition Coils

Today my car started very roughly albeit WITHOUT any CELs. While revving it a bit to see what happens I got a CEL saying that I should drive the car slowly to a dealer to have it checked (avoid revving it) :p.

I figured it was a misfire before I connected by INPA/DIS setup, which indeed verified my assumption.

Cylinder 4 Ignition Coil implausible result.

In DIS I was ample to use the DME-MISFIRE check and saw that indeed a cylinder was mifiring on every engine revolution.

To make sure it was the ignition coil and not the spark plug, as the error code stated, I swapped the ignition coils and erased the errors. After a couple of minutes the DME re-registered the error this time on cylinder 2, where the ignition coil was moved. The DIS test also showed that the cylinder misfiring was different than the previous one.

So it appears that one of my ignition coils is gone. I tried to clean it, but nada. It's dead. Since these units are sealed, I don't see a way to open it and see for good if something is bad. Or I am missing something??

Should I go for OEM (Delphi) or are there any better alternatives?

PS: DIS apparently states the cylinder number in the MISFIRE check wrongly: when cylinder 4 was misfiring it would say it was cylinder 1. After swapping them, it would state cylinder 4 when it was cylinder 1. It doesn't make sense for anything else to be true, since I tried it without any ignition connected and verified my conclusions. I guess there are bugs in this software.

OEM part should be fine. Their pretty expensive little things. I replaced all 4 of mine couple years ago since they had some rust on them(1 of them was pretty bad) and also caused rough idling and misfires on cylinder 4 as well. After I replaced the ignition coils, everything was running fine, no misfires and it was running smooth again.
I think the cause is from the hood scoop being aimed at the ignition coils and since I had a open scoop, prolly made it worse. The salt and water from the winters didn't help it either.

Good luck with yours.

Update:

I couldn't locate the exact match for the Delphi OEM one, but I found a BOSCH 0 221 504 464 which fits perfectly. It is also completely sealed, no exposed metal parts that rust like the Delphi one.

PS: I saw on the Internet that the same BOSCH coils sold on ebay actually have exposed metal parts. Bosch must have changed the design at some point to avoid the rust problems, so better look to get newer versions of the part.

The Okada Projects Plasma Coils are nice, bit pricey, but good stuff. Also their Ground kit is a nice addition. Though honestly for stock application/performance it is an overkill and stock coils should more then suffice. If your replacing your coils, i'd do plugs @ the same time.

Hey,

I have similar issues, did you get 0300 codes? or a P1497?

I get misfires after about a minute of idling and during regular driving, after checking and replacing many things, I think it may be coil related..

Car was jerking for some time and though i may need new injectors, so was waiting to get them replaced while i used the car on daily basis. A month ago I'd have the cars ASC turn on and car would run rough until i switched it off. Once on again ASC light wasnt there and car would run ok until I'd give it a little then repeat the ASC light would come on...wasmt the wheel speed sensor as i didnt have the all 3 yellow lights up. Today car started to on idle have a little cough, mind you it was misfiring as well in the last month. So I've got a spare r53 borrowed its ignition coil and guess what...problem fixed, car is running like new....hope that helps as well to people with similar symptoms
