Odd shifting balance in the car
Odd shifting balance in the car
Interesting. I went around a corner this morning at speed in my 2012 Justa, under moderate power. The car started out understeering, as expected, then transitioned to mild oversteer partway through the corner, then transitioned back to understeer. It was a somewhat disconcerting feeling.
I did not look down at my dash in the middle of this, but I looked down after I had the car running straight again, and I didn't see any warning lights.
Was that the stability control operating? It let the back step out a little bit mid-corner and then braked me back into a condition of understeer?
My car does not have the DSC options, just the one system that comes standard with the car. (I forget which one that is, sorry!)
Anyone experience anything similar?

I come from the Honda world.... Just bought my first mini earlier this month.
I know most mini's came with rear sway bars. By any chance, did you lift off the throttle during the turn, when you felt the rear slide out?
If so, its called lift off oversteer. Basically, the rear suspension gets loaded and then unloads, transfering weight and making the rear of the car "lighter". This creates oversteer being that the suspension is unsettled, and makes the rear end kick out. The only way to keep it under control is getting back on the throttle or trail braking.
I used to do this on autocross courses all the time with my civic. It had a large rear sway bar, coilovers, and no front swaybar. It basically amplified the effects, but I could get the car quite "bent out of shape" doing this. You just have to be careful.

Nope, I didn't lift. I believe I was modulating the throttle, but I did not come all the way off it--nor did I get it all the way to the floor. I don't think I would have been so surprised if the throttle had caused the oversteer, I do expect that from other cars.
