clutch rattle

I saw this is called the "chewbacca." Basically, the clutch rattles when not compressed. If this is an easy fix, what should I do? I don't want to replace the clutch just yet.. Buuutttt if I should, what cheap/good performance clutch kit should I go for?

If the clutch rattles when the pedal is not depressed (i.e. it is engaged) and the noise goes away when you push the clutch to the floor (i.e. clutch disengaged), it's probably your input shaft bearing going bad.

Most likely I shouldn't attempt to change it if I'm not mechanically inclined.. Right?
Thank you.

If you are going to change any compotent other than a hydrolic cylindar on a clutch it is a BIG JOB, even for a pro...the better part of a day. So unless you are a VERY ACCOMPLISHED diy'r, bet to let somebody else do it. And if one part of the clutch is bad, you swap out the entire thing...the clutch, etc, since the job is mostly labour.
One warning....by defintion, a "high performance" clutch usually has a very short life...think of a clutch as being like a big brake pad...a performance clutch has a different materal....so it making one tgat grips better than stock, it ends up with a much shorter life.
the oem or oem style clutch is what 90% of folks need in a mini imo....a solid flywheen can save a few $$, but results in more nvh.

Any ideas on pricing? If I should buy a clutch then bring it somewhere to have it installed or should I just let the BMW place near here do it all?

What you are describing is due to the flywheel, and it is a well documented issue. There was even a TSB out about it.

To replace the clutch/flywheel it is a big job...i think it bills out as a 8-10 job at the dealers. It's usually a couple grand if you have them do it...obviously if you go to an indie shop it will be much cheaper. As far as what to buy...the words "cheap" & "good performance" NEVER go together, especially when talking clutches. If you want a good performing clutch, look no further than OS Giken. Otherwise just stay with stock...

I'm just gonna stick with stock until I can afford performance overall. Guess I'll go Indie haha where should I buy from for the clutch? Obviously I'm new to the world of minis.
