The driver's side window in our 2003 Cooper stopped working today. I can hear a click click in the door when I push the switch but it doesn't move down from the full up position it's in, even if i try to "help" it by pushing down with my hand.
The passenger side works normally.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

Try a reset; door open, car running, hold window switch UP for 10s. Theoretically if the door is open, you don't need to wait 10s, but anyway ...

Other than that, when mine did this, I just clicked up / down / up / down ... a few times and suddenly it was moving again.

This will sound bad but bang lightly on the lower front part of the door panel on the inside. This will free up the motor untill you can get it to a dealer.

The window could be off the track. But more than likely, it sounds like what happened to my passenger side window. The window motor burned out. Have your dealer check it out and replace it under warranty.

That same thing happened to me. If you didn't drive the car for a few says, the window wouldn't work. Play with the switch and you're okay. Take it to the dealer and get the ubiquitous "cannot duplicate". A week later, the motor is just dead, take it to the dealer and they tell me it needs a new motor. Now the window works properly.

This happens to me on a regular basis....I'm a pro at figuring this dumb thing out already. You say it's in the full-up position, which means your door won't close all the way. When this happens to me, I can hear the clicking, but no movement in the window (same as you described). So I close the door all the way (hoping the glass doesn't break on me as it is now bending) and the window works again. I guess I don't really suggest closing the door all the way while your window is in the full up position, but it works for me! Every time I take it to the dealership to get fixed, I get the same thing The_Beastmaster gets....cannot duplicate.

Ohh, this happend to me too, drivers side window wouldn't go down and I couldn't close my door all the way. Right before I was supposed to go to a track day where you need your windows opened. I tried everything, even the reset and the only thing that fixed it was a forcefull fist against the front lower corner of my door panel. Been working fine now for a month. I've replaced power window units on the last three cars I've owned. They suck, makes me wish I had my Miata back. Power nothing and it never went in for service repairs the whole 9 years it was around and it was a first model year car (1990).

I would try what everyone else suggested first. At first mine would just continually open and shut by itself but eventually stayed in the up position. After 3 days at the dealership they found a short in the system. Several other systems were other acting funny, like the nav and interior dome light.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll try it all as soon as the window stops working again. Charlotte just called to say it was functioning normally this morning. Now we have the problem that the car has 35,000 miles on it. Will it fail again before the warranty runs out.
BTW, this 2003 Cooper has been practically trouble free. Several buttons on the radio stopped working, although the same functions worked from the steering wheel buttons. It was replaced under warranty and that's been the only nonscheduled visit to the dealer.
Charlotte continues to have fun experiences with it at work and on her commute. Someone asked her recently what the car would be when it grows up and she was ready with an answer: "A London double-decker bus."

Take it in anyway... I had the same intermittent problem, the dealer said that there was a flat spot on the motor and that's why it wasn't working all the time. They had to replace the motor

If they open up the door to get at the motor, listen to your car very carefully when you get it back. We had incredible wind noise develop after they went into our door, drive over 70 and often times it would sound like the window was about to get ripped off the car! Turned out that they didn't put the door back together correctly. It took us 3 trips to the dealer before they fixed that...

Don't forget your warranty is to 50K, not 36K. Only the free service expires at 36K.

Had the problem here, too. If you complain enough they will replace the motor on it.

I had the same issue last year with my driver's side window.
My dealer replaced whole door regulating unit including motor.
Since then, it works perfectly.
I would say, this is a motor problem(manufacturing defect, probably) as everybody says.
When I asked the service manager if this is typical problem with MINI, he said "Y,yeah,,, kind of,,,"
They knew it.

Anyway, you need to ask to order the parts first because normally they have no stock of this part. I had to wait for one week before getting my window fixed.
They fixed it in 2-3 hours.

Don't push the window down by hand or rattle togle switch. It might cause another problem.

Happy Motoring!

Many Thanks! My 03 MCS driver's window stopped working today, and now, thanks to your comments, I have the insight to the problem. Always the first step. I can't just run to the dealer since I am on an island (Hawaii), and the dealer is on another (Oahu). It would cost me $300 dollars just to ship the car, and I would be without it at least two weeks. This is the second 'defect', the first being the radiator expansion tank, that I have had to deal with. Other than that, it's been a great little car.
Thanks again,
JCIP

Well, the reset didn't work, but the brisk thump to the lower door panel did! My window is restored, at least for now. Thanks again!

Mine does this ONLY after I was it.... I was thinking that something was getting wet and needed to dry out before window function was restored...
