I can see a shiny pulley so I must have lost a belt. I let it sit and started it up. I get the 1688 code and I'm able to drive it I turned ac off with the hopes it was just that but I'm not sure. I'm parked in a lot but not sure if ishould attempt 23 mi ride home

There's a mini BMW tuner in Newark. but I have no contact info for him. Closest dealer is 24 miles

Thoughts?
AAA tow truck.

And prestige mini is in mahwah NJ and morristown mini is also close.

Definitely don't drive 23 miles. Belt drives the alternator, AC and SC.
Belt install isn't overly complex, but you do need to compress the pulley tensioner. There is a special MINI tool for this, but you can use about any 2-3' long metal rod.
Here is one DIY method.

Drives the waterpump also. Don't drive it and risk major damage from overheating.

If you dont know what you are doing, being stuck on a road at night in a place that is not exactly known for being safe , I would get it towed ,its the best thing to do. Why risk your self trying to fix your car on the side of the road.

If you tossed the belt and do not have a tensioner stop I'd be zhocked if the tensioner didnt crash into the crank pulley too.

Sounds like you alreaxy drove it a bit stuck in traffic. Sure hope you didnt overheat. I hope taping it was a joke. Duct tape wouldnt even hold it together against the strength of the tensioner.

I would hope you have roadside/tow coverage on your insurance!

We'll now in the daylight I can see... I didn't lose the belt. It may be slipping though.

Code 1688. First sign was the battery light on in idle in traffic

Ugh. Morristown is pulling the "let's replace what code 1688 in the manual tells us". Not belts
Ecu

That would cause the burnt rubber smell??

Convinced them to take another look.... Broken balancer. And leaky thermostat housing (recall?). $1400 before taxes.

That is alot of coin, I just had my balancer, water pump, theromostat, belt, and housing replaced, plus they put in my rebuilt supercharger for under 1200. I had this done in Denville and my car has never run so good.

Recall on the tstat housing- havent heard of that one. Perhaps a technical service bulletin. Either way this place rubs me the wrong way by the sounds of things. Not sure how they thought it was a bad ecu when Way knew 1000 miles away even that this was gonna be a balancer issue, lol. Honestly, the banacer can be replaced by any ham fisted gorilla in about an hours time with simple tools. If you have them do it, I would Seriously consider buyimg either of the fluid/gel filled dampers that Way sells on his site. Its very common for the Oem damper to fail, but Ive never heard of an ATI failing..

Also, ask about the leak. If theyre quoting it because they see dried crust coming from that area or wetness like seepage then its not an immediate concern. If its dripping out of the housing or the housing is cracked and you're loosing coolant to the ground then by all meams, address it before you overheat.

Either way, thats a steep price and starting off by quoting an ecu it doesnt instill much confidence. I sure hope you can get back on the road and motoring soon though!
