Check engine light after smog test

Today I brought my '08 MINI S in for the smog check and after passing the test; as I was driving it away from the station, I noticed a check engine light on the dash. I turned around and went back and the smog guy ran a check and cleared the light, but had no idea what the codes meant - the codes were P1774 and P1775. I looked them up online and found this:
P1774 - CAN Wheel Speed Rear Left Wheel, No Signal
P1775 - CAN Wheel Speed Rear Right Wheel, No Signal

I called my dealer up and gave him the codes and he explained that the computer senses the front wheels moving and the back wheels not moving and throws a code.

So - if anyone gets their MINI smogged and gets a check engine light, go back and have them clear it.

I hope this saves at least one person the aggravation that it caused me today.

The tech at MINI said it doesn't always happen and he didn’t know why it would sometimes throw a code and sometimes not. After the code was cleared the light didn't go back on and I drove it on errands for the rest of the day.

May be it is the amount of time or distance that the front has to travel before a code is thrown. That may explain it as when my car gets smog tested they only run the wheels for about 30-45 seconds. If yours was for a longer period of time or distance run then maybe it would trip it.

Here in California we have pretty strict smog laws and on my Inspection Report it shows they had to run the car at 15 mph and 25 mph to complete the inspection. I've watched them do the smog test on some of my other vehicles and they run it on the rollers for more than a minute.

We only have to get it checked every other year so if it happens again I will know to have the smog tech clear the codes before I leave.
