Think I have a camber issue, speedo/gps diff speed, new mini owner.

I just noticed this Sunday morning after returning from our alien hunting trip in Roswell NM, lol. I think the camber/alignment is off and not sure if it happen on the trip or has been like that, I've owned the mini almost a month and just noticed it. I was backed in the drive way and came out the house and saw it from a distance, I usually don't see the car this way so that is why I am unsure if it has been like this. Any thoughts or possible fixes would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

also i noticed my garmin gps and my car speedo show different speeds, while cruse set at 79 according to the garmin, the car showed 83, any thoughts? this might seem fast, but the speed limit is 75 and on country flat, straight west texas roads where your the only car for MILES, lol

79 to 83 is a pretty small error...
Rememer, tire diameter is the biggest factor in speedo error...many cars have non oem sizes, but even different brands vary when new, and as they wear...
As for camber, do you have lowering springs?
Best way to check is go to an alighnment shop, get a 4 wheel aligunment done...if the rear 2 are out of wack, than you likly have lowering springs, and need adjustble control arms to prevent odd tire wewr....just one off, you might have a different issue.

thanks for the reply, to my knowledge i do not have lowering springs unless the previous owner installed them. also the rims and tires should be factory. i'll try to post a little better picture so you can see both sides of the rear and tell the difference

what you are seeing is "negative camber", mini uses a lot of it, my countryman s all4 looks the same

it is good for handling, not so good for tire wear

i'll take the handling

Just from the picture the camber looks fairly close to what it should be of course it is hard to tell just form a picture.

As for the speedo there are numerous threads on this forum about the error. here is a post I just made on that subject this morning.

Just by eyeballing the photos, that rear camber appears to be somewhere between 1.5 and 2.0 degrees. If so, that's probably within MINI alignment specs.

I'm taking the concrete expansion joint line as being level, although the driveway seems to slope slightly downward from right to left. If so, that might make the right wheel/tire appear to have somewhat more negative camber than the left. Pull the car into the driveway frontward and see if that "fixes" the apparent side-to-side camber difference.

Assuming the car is resting on a completely even/flat surface, you can roughly check side-to-side camber differences using just a carpenter's level. A Smart camber gauge would be even better (less hillbilly), but an alignment machine would be best.

I wish MINI had given us that extra rear camber in front instead of the rear.

I can confirm the speedo error is "normal", MINI (and BMW) are know to slightly overstate a vehicles speed. I've heard the reason for this is due to some Euro regulation that imposes heavy fines if a car reads slower than its actual speed across all the stock tire sizes.
My 10MC reads the same 4mph over that yours does on the stock 15s, been like that since I drove it off the lot.

EDIT: I found this thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...libration.html See post #4 from someone who knows more about the speedo error than I do

Just pulled the alignment report from my last alignment, MINI spec for rear camber is -1.83 to -1.67 so Jim is right on the money there.

Both non-issues. No need to worry. Lots of other things to eventually worry about though.

So this if fine? Just seems aggressive on the rear for a OE setup. I just noticed my wife's countryman the other day and was not sure if it was ok. I don't know what the degree is but it is 1in difference from bottom of tire to top and the front tires only have 3/8in. You all can let me know if that is ok. Her car is only 5 months old and no mods to it.

Stock rear camber does seem somewhat aggressive for a street driven car, while front camber seems too modest. Some owners try to switch that around by reducing rear camber and increasing front camber.

It's fine. They all come stock with alot of camber in the rear.

ok thanks. Good to know because I was about to take the car in to the dealer for them to check it out. That would have been a waist of time.
