I recently replaced my alternator on mini 2004 mini cooper non S with a lot of help from this forum, much thanks! I have stange problem with the power steering after replacing the alternator. Intermittently the power steering takes a second or two to kick in after starting. The only thing I can figure is the non oem alternator I installed a Bosch is somehow different. I noticed when I first checked the new alternator after install that it took a second or two to show charging on my meter. Could this be my problem or just a coincidence? On a side note fully charged battery and had the battery load tested, which came out good before first start with the new alternator.

 

The ps pump has a "SENSE" Wire...so it will only run when the alternator is making voltage....so it sounds like you found the issue...a alternator that is for somereason delaying output....

I have the exact same problem
after I had the alternator changed there is the occasional delay in the power steering

hope this doesn’t lead to another problem
