Sorry all for delay on this, but here is the info you have all asked for:
the OLD PART # AS LISTED ON PREVIOUS INVOICES WAS:1 51-31-1-483-874 WINDSHIELD

the NEW PART# AS LISTED ON MY MOST RECENT INVOICE:1 51-31-7 146-544 WINDSCREEN GREEN.

PLEASE ALSO REFER TO THE LABELING IN THE LOWER DRIVER'S SIDE CORNER AS REFERED TO IN THE POST"THE NEW IMPROVED WINDSHIELD" Hope this helps all you unhappy campers who like me love the car,but hate the windshield.

Insist on the new product (not that I know for certain that this fix is the real deal, but I know FOR CERTAIN that the old one isn't!!!!!!!!!!!)

Excellent info. Does the invoice list retail cost for the glass?

I just put in a PPG under $300 installed covered by comp. for $100. Glass optical quality, tint and feel are as good as OEM or better. I cannot feel any ripples or waves as another poster has indicated. Could still be an alternative for those who cannot get warr. replacement due to a micro chip. (like me)

The aftermarket shop pointed out the chip and said "any windshield can crack with this type of impact" seems crazy but that's what the pro told me. The car had 300 mi. on it and I never heard the rock "tick".

No, since the install was done under Warrentee, all it said was N/C

I don't suppose you know if there's a new part number for the rain-sensing windshield, do you?

I just got a new windshield with the rain sensor that must be the "new improved"
part - even looks different (less black around edges and different labels). The part number is 51-31-1-505-851 $238.26 at my dealer.

There are so many threads running now about the windshields that I decided to post in all of them, sorry for the repeats.

I am one of the many who have had a stress-cracked windshield (after 2 months in my ’04 MINI), and one of the fewer who have had it replaced under warranty. Now, after 4k miles on windshield #2 it looks like someone took an ice-pick to it. I have one ¼-inch size pit along with at least 30 to 40 sand size pits. In my previous 4 cars I have owned (Ford, Honda, Chrysler), after having driven 550,000 miles combined, I have yet to see a windshield this soft!!!!

Anyway, getting to the point, I checked my current windshield and it does not appear to be the ‘new’ windshield discussed on this board recently. So, tonight I called 866-ASK-MINI, described my problem, and then asked about the new improved windshield. Unfortunately, the response was that she had not heard anything about this…..but, she was willing to take my information and said they would call back after researching it. She was polite and did not talk down to me like my dealer has in the past. I am pretty skeptical of anything coming of this, BUT, if we ALL took the time to call 866-ASK-MINI and complained about the windshields and requested information about an improved product it would be another way to slowly beat home the point that these windshields are miserable excuses for glass and we are tired of MINI’s avoidance of the problem!!

Hey guy,

I forwarded this thread and the part number to my service advisor, and here is what he had to say

Hey, Louay.

Thanks for the thread. You might want to let people know, thats not a new w/s. Its an old w/s but with a tint on it. Its an old part number. They dont install them for cars here in the U.S.A. from the factory, its a w/s they install overseas from the factory. So its not going to be any better except for the fact that it will have a slight tint and possibly a darker tint strip on top.

Hope this helps.

Steve

So...what are we to believe?

I do have the "new" windshield on my 12/03 built 2004 MC, purchased from Sterling MINI dealer in Virginia. So MINI is now installing this w/s on USA bound cars. I'm bummed, if it not an improved w/s!

Sorry let me make a quick correction...I started the post with "hey guy" when in fact I meant "hey GUYS" the typo might make it seem like an attack. I gave him the part number ending in 544 so I could get mine replaced and he answered with the message I quoted...

I would be curious to know....was the exact quote "So its not going to be any better ...."??????? If so, then it is an interesting choice of words from a company that insists there is no problem??? Hmmmmmmmmmmm

SINCE ORIGINALLY POSTING THIS THREAD,AND BASED ON THE SEED OF DOUBT PLANTED ABOUT THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE # FOR THIS NEW WINDSHIELD,I STARTED PRESSING MY CONTACT AT BMWNA TO VERIFY THE ACCURACY OF THE #I POSTED. THIS IS HIS RESPONSE(POSTED TODAY):

"The part number we shipped Peabody was 51 31 7 146 544. Standard windshield
(non rain sensing) with the enhancements we discussed."

I'D LOVE TO KNOW WHERE STEVE MEYER GOT HIS INFO(SERVICE MGR.AT MONUMENT MINI IN HOUSTON,TX) I'd love to hear from him directly.

My MINI is on its way accross the pond right now; And I have been in contact with an engineer at the factory through a friend who understandably wants to remain anonymous

This Engineer said that mine (Built on the 12th of march) will have the new windscreen;
the quote from him about the new glass is interesting

""not specifically stronger, but more durable"

I just had a wonderful discussion with an ASK-MINI advisor about my second cracked windshield and I am very happy to report that the assistance was great. There are a couple items to discuss.

First, I had my last stress cracked windshield replaced in November and developed a new crack about 2 weeks ago. The ASK-MINI advisor very cleary stated that "YES, it does appear that an improved replacement windshield has been introduced since your service in November" (There are quote's here for a reason). He stated that he would be more then happy to serve as my advocat when I go into the dealer to have the new windshield replaced under warrantee.

That brings up the second issue, the new crack (which is dead center middle, right behind the rear-view mirror) goes right through one of many pit and stone chips. Based on what I was told by the service department on my last visit this would not be covered under warranty. The ASK-MINI advisor acknowledge that this would be an issue that would have to be dealt with. I then suggested that even if the windshield could not be replced under warranty due this chip, should MINI not at least take-on some of the cost since the windhshield is so obviously susceptible to pitting and they have an improved product....indicating MINI recognized there is an issue??? The ASK-MINI advisor agreed that this was a valid point and he thinks something could be arranged.

So, I was very happy to hear someone at MINI say an improved windshield is out. Plus, they were reasonable and interested in discussing my complaint and ideas on at least sharing the cost of replacement if not covering the cost under warranty completely. Thank you to my new (I have his extension number!!!) ASK-MINI advisor. You can be sure I will only contact him and hope he really can assist when I get to the dealer.
