Steering column tilt mechanism issue !

Hi guys,do you know how to fix a worn out steering tilt adjustment, mine is too loose and doesn't lock when the steering is mid way. As soon as there's a slight push down,it drops not locking at all,it's a safety issue and I would like to fix myself. I don't know how to remove the lower cover, there's snaps i thing and don't want to brake anything. I am mechanically incline so I just want to undo the cover and have a peak in there, thanks for any help.

There are about 2-4 screws on the bottom of the cover. (Sorry, don't recall exact number) Remove those and the bottom cover should pop off.

I just looked in my trusty manual.
Remove the lower dashboard trim, (panel by your knees). Pull on the top, and it will just swing out. May take some force, but you won't break it.
Then remove the 2 screws on either side of the SW adjust lever, and the cover should come right off. There are some retaining clips that you might have to release as well, just 2, and they are at the other end opposite the screws.
Here's a link to a diagram http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...21&hg=32&fg=30
Hope it helps!!

I noticed two torque screws on the lower cover but the top trim is snapped with the lower, don't want to brake the snaps or clips. I read that you have to pry hard to split them, any other clips at the bottom,I saw a picture that was showing bottom clips, what do I have to worry about, thanks for the help guys

Forgot to mention, my MINI is one of the first in North America, so my parts my be slightly different. I would think you would be able to figure it out on the fly, pretty easy.
From what I've done to my MINI so far, I usually stress before I start a project, just because I don't want to mess anything up, but then I get into the project, and find its way easier than I envisioned it!
Go ahead and start, and you will find it'll be easy. Unless you're impatient, like me, you shouldn't have any breakage!!

Yeah. It is not that hard. Just carefully study things as you go and figure out how the engineers put the thing together. The only place you need a lot of force is to pull the knee bolster.
After that, the steering column bottom cover should almost fall off once you have removed the screws.

Broken spring

I tackled this loose tilt issue and found this broken spring under the lower cover. Anyone tell me where it goes and what it's for?

That "spring" is part of the tilt mechanism. Can be seen here intact

Your very welcome, does not seem as if this part is purchasable on its own as its part of the column assembly. You may have to find a local parting out an r50-r53, or order an entire column unless you can find this part on its own.

Spring purpose

Thanks, Scoobaru! Does the spring just assist with raising the tilt steering? I got it back together without it and seems to function okay.

Yes I believe it's what locks the lever down, im not sure what other function it would serve to be honest. You should be fine without it!
