Oil & Filter Change..

Hello. Help! Just did an oil change. Anyone know if damage can be caused by installing the oil filter upside down? (oops, I hate when that happens!). The oil pressure light came on at first but soon stopped coming on. Also the dipstick shows about 3/4 inch overfill-should I remove some oil?

It's possible to put the filter on upside down?? I thought they were bidirectional...

If you have an r56 S, it will probably burn through that extra oil in 1000 miles anyway. Some may advise you to take some out though....3/4 of an inch is almost an extra quart.

Agreed, suck some out.
The filter shouldn't matter, goes on either way just be sure the
rubber gasket is seated correctly.

for the record .... the GEN1 filter is different on the two ends, while the GEN2 filter is the same. There is a correct way to put in the GEN1, but does not matter on a GEN2

here's the two filters, GEN1 on the left (both 'genuine MINI parts)

that black ring you see on the end of the GEN1 is not present on the other end . . .

I guess we assumed it was a 2nd gen.
It'd be nice if people would post in their
sigs what they have. Year, etc.

If your car is a '04, then it's a 1st generation MINI. You could have the filter upside down-if possible.

Dude - A 2004 is not a 2nd Gen.... And they want you to fill out a signature. >> User CP >> Edit Signature

You have 2 threads going on this now....... https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...il-change.html

I am seriously thinking on our low mileage 6,000 a year grocery getter MINI to change just the oil at 6 months - since even that is way overkill. Then have the dealer so it all at their annual service. That way I can avoid that funky canister filter altogether for now on. Although I did get the filter socket and drain plug allen socket and change oil and filter the first time myself at 5,000 miles and 6 months. The MINI did see 10,000 miles the first year just because we drove all over the place like everyone does with a new car.

...And this section of the forum is the "2nd generation MINIs/Stock Problems and Issues" forum, so I don't feel bad assuming that anything in here refers to the 2nd-gen cars.

Since you car is an 04/1st Gen, you must be sure your filter is on correctly.
If you were able to install the filter upside down, you might-as-well not have a filter on. The opposing ends are different sizes. Long story short, filter will not seal correctly and allow unfiltered oil back into the engine. (This decreases the life of the engine.)
