Check Engine P1434?

Hi,

Check engine light went on Sunday morning on my 2011 Clubman S with 7K miles. No observed difference in engine performance. I pulled the code and it was P1434. Searched high and low on the net and haven't found any info on P1434. Has anyone experienced this issue or have MINI obd II engine code table?

Probably bring it to the BMW dealer tomorrow but would like to know the severity of this warning as I need to use the car.

Thanks in advance on any info!

That fault code refers to the fuel tank evaporative control system, which includes the carbon canister, plumbing for condensing fuel vapors, the purge solenoid valve, and the leak detection unit [DMTL] which pressurizes the fuel tank and evaporative system to monitor system leaks. The DMTL is mounted directly to the activated carbon canister, which is located underneath the vehicle.

Since you're under warranty, I'd let them diagnose and fix what's needed.

Generic OBD-II scanner

It issued two codes: P1434 and a pending P1434

We called BMW this morning to set up an appointment but it's Presidents Day so I'll try again tomorrow (we don't have a MINI Dealer on the Big Island of Hawaii). However, need to drive it to work or the dealership 25 miles (2,500 ft elevation change) and I'm guessing it will be OK.

Thanks for the heads up on the code bluefox280.

I will post a final conclusion to add to the knowledge base.

Yes, you will; there's nothing current that will ruin the vehicle.

Did you check the gas cap? That sounds like the kind of code you might get if it were not on tightly or correctly.

DMTL Pump Faulty...

Hi!

In my case the engine light OBD II code P1434 was diagnosed at Kailua-Kona BMW as a faulty DMTL pump and was promptly replaced.

Thanks again Bluefox for the timely information on the OBD II P1434 code description that accurately described the possible problem.

Slave to Feline, many people mentioned the gas cap including the dealership. This must be a common problem as I've experienced the gas cap issue several times in my Toyota P/U truck, Mazda Miata and Protoge. However, in this case it was the DMTL pump.

DMTL, is this warranty work??

I have a 2009, base model Clubman with just over 40K miles on it. About 2K miles ago the gas cap light came on, I checked the cap, and then a day or so later the check engine light came on. I replaced the gas cap with a MINI part, and had my local garage do a generic code scan which reported P0434, small evaporator leak and P1434, fuel module tank leakage. The nearest MINI dealer is a three hour drive away so next I took the car to a MINI and BMW service garage for an "official" code scan. Similar report, 27AC-DMTL, diagnostic module tank leak. Both garages told me a smoke test would be needed to determine the exact problem. Anybody have a similar problem and is this likely to be covered under warranty? I'd really like to know before taking a long road trip...

Armed with the information (hopefully documented) you have, why haven't you called your dealer to see what your options are?
Since it appears you are still under warranty (again, call to confirm), I'd still make the trek to the dealer.
If not in warranty, then yes, use a local MINI repair shop to get things fixed as needed.

Hi bluefox,
I did call the dealer and after a bit of go around the response was encouraging but noncommittal. My concern is the warranty appears to be 3yr/50K for emissions (I've owned the car for over three years) but I don't know if the problem falls under that warranty or the new vehicle warranty of 4yr/50K. Sounds like I'm stuck driving there to find out if it's covered based on their tests, otherwise I'd have it repaired locally and save myself the trip and precious vacation days!

I had this pop up tonight. Tightened the gas cap and cleared the code. Hasn't come back.

I have a 2009 Mini Cooper Hatchback (R56). I experience P1434 that I read using an OBD2 diagnostic device and my handheld (very handy). By searching the internet I learned that if related to the DMTL (Diagnostic Module Tank Leakage) which is for the evap system the only service for this code condition is to replace the DMTL this represent a internal failed module. You still have to let the dealer diagnose it, but this is covered by extended warranty through 120000 miles! Just got mine fixed by the dealer. Yeahhh Mini Cooper!
