The "industry" can say whatever it wants to. Bottom line... if you plan on being a long-term owner of your car, regardless of make or model, do not for one minute believe all fluids or various parts are guaranteed for life. I highly recommend changing the transmission fluid at ~40K intervals, and I also highly recommend changing the timing belt (or inspect it at a minimum if possible without tearing down too much of the engine).
