Sound & Microphone suddenly dead
Sound & Microphone suddenly dead
I have a 2009 MCS with the navigation package and bluetooth integration. Last night, everything was working fine; listening to the radio, talking on the phone through the car, etc.
This morning on my way to work, I could get no audio (radio, ipod, phone, nothing) and when I made a call to my work voicemail the in-car microphone picked up no audio.
But, everything *looks* like it's working fine. I can interact with the radio, I can navigate my ipod music through the car and it shows time elapsing when playing a track... there's just no audio.
The only thing that I think might not have been at least acting like it worked was the voice control. I'd hit the voice button on the steering wheel, and I think there used to be a little mouth and some dots that would appear in the lower left of the navigation display; that didn't show up. But, were I a deaf person, that's the only thing that would seem amiss.
I'd rather not tear apart the dash (or pay my dealer big hourly-rate labor bucks to do the same) if I don't have a good idea of what the cause of the problem is. So, has anyone out there seen this before? Or does anyone have any likely candidates for root cause that I might want to look at?
Any help would be appreciated.

What system do you have Base, or HiFi?
Can you hear the person talking to you form the other end of a phone call?
And how many miles do you have on the car? as a 2009 you still have time left on your warranty and if you have less than 50K miles then you are under warranty so it should not cost you anything for the dealer to fix it.

HiFi
No, I couldn't. All audio was completely dead.
Ha! No, I have nearly 75k on it. Blew through my warranty in just 20 months.
-------
Everything was working fine late last night.
This morning on my way to work, all audio was dead -- I tried all I could think of to fix it, including turning the car on and off a few times.
But then this afternoon when I went for lunch, everything was magically working fine again.
I cancelled my appointment with the dealership, but am still going to keep an eye on things in case the problem returns. And I'm absolutely still interested in root cause ideas in case it does.

I would check all connections from the radio to the HiFi amp and see if anything is loose or has come disconnected.
In these types of cases where a loose wire or connector is the problem there will be no code. These are unimportant electronics to the operation of the car so the dont show anything.

But I don't think it's as simple as that. The connections between the amp, head unit, speakers, etc. all have those latching connectors where you push them in, then lock them down with a lever. And if it was a loose connection, why wouldn't I experience problems driving around town? (we have some pretty bad roads around here)
