hard start/rough idle 2007 R56

2007 R56, manual, ~36K miles. Hard start problem. When started it idles rough until you "clear it out" with the throttle. Little bit of black smoke like it's running rich. Anyone familiar with this symptom? Only code shown on display is "state inspection" due. I have read a little on the HPFP. Had one go out on 2010 Equinox company car. Is this possibly the culprit? Car is now out of regular warranty so don't want to get stuck with diagnostic fees if it's not the HPFP. Any other ideas are welcome.

If your mini is an S then it could be carbon build up on the cylinders.

What's the fix on the carbon buildup? Obviously don't want to tear down the motor.

OK, found the TSB on the diagnosis and cleaning procedure. Doesn't look like I will be able to do this one in my garage.

Forgot to get back on this one. Took to MINI of Nashville. Found it was the high pressure fuel pump so all taken care of under warranty. Woo-hoo!
