overheating

My brothers 2005 JCW MCS is overheating. His Fan never turns on and his a/c is hot sometimes. Any help is much appreciated. I have an 2004 JCW MCS and my fan is running constantly during the day. We both live in Utah and is always around the 90's. When he sits at lights or in traffic you can just see the temp rise. He did get in a front end crash but it mostly just damaged the hood. He had it all fixed and i am just wondering if the mechanic didn't notice if the fan was broken or not.

The low speed fan is kinda quiet and can be difficult to tell when it's running, but in both cases I would turn on the A/C and check both the power steering pump cooling fan and the low speed fan to be sure they are coming on. Sorta killing two birds with one stone here while at it.

Both should kick in about 20 seconds after turnig on the A/C. If not, check their respective fuses. If fuse for the fan assembly is ok, the resistor attached to the low speed fan assembly are known to blow requiring the replacement of the whole fan assembly and that could be the problem....

Mine was replaced with a $80.00 TYC brand fan assembly (from an eBay store in GA) which when held up next to the OEM fan was exactly the same and it's running strong today after 45K miles.

2004 MCS first fan ran alot after turning off, air conditioner stopped, overheated (light came on), filled expansion tank, milky muddy thick sludge-like mixture on the top after opening, where is the radiator, thinking if flush, but what is this sludge stuff?

It looks like a blown head gasket sign. coolant and oil mixing up.

Not a blown head gasket. But a bunch of other lights have come on too.. traction control light, ABS, and tire monitor light.

How do you know its not a blown headgasket? or a cracked block? Are you looking for the fuse for the cooling fan? If i remember right, its built in to the front fuse box. If the fan isn't running, its the fan, 99.9% sure on that.

Should not be a bunch of muck in the overflow coolant tank. Unless the vehicle has never been maintained or has an internal problem. Is the level of fluid correct in the overflow?

Well if it was a blown headgasket there would be coolant mixing in with the oil correct? Just changed the oil on the car. Just black used oil came out. And for the fuse i have no idea which one it is. The overflow as the correct amount of coolant in there and no muck in it. I'm pretty sure is fan assembly is broke.. Well i'm not sure about anything but the car did get in a front end crash but mostly just bent up the hood and cracked the bumper but no where near the fan. Mostly on the corner of the car.

Depending on if/where the head gasket has failed, there can be oil in the coolant but no coolant in the oil. Oil pressure is greater than coolant pressure. Suggest a compression test and a cooling system pressure test to confirm or eliminate that possibility.

Looks like something fell of the car or you picked something up somehow. Weird. Does the fan work now that the foreign object is gone?

I am assuming the mechanic that fixed the hood and bumper dropped it in there. I have no idea where it goes. Any thoughts? I havent dropped the car and drove it yet to see if the fan works. But i bet it burned up the motor.

I bet your right about the motor. It's probably toast. The piece looks like a bracket of some sort. That's a shame and it sounds like it didn't have to happen. Carelessness.

I hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Hopefully no other engine damage either.

That bracket attaches to the frame rail next to the A/C high pressure service port. It holds the wire harness for the fans in place. Probably broke off in the collision and wedged itself in the fan thus burning it up.

Well thats what you think would happen but the bracket has no damage. Thats why i assume the mechanic dropped it in there.
