Radiator Fan keeps running after car is off
Hey guys, I got an '02 S. Lately my radiator fan keeps on running after I turn off my car. After it happened the first time(july4) I promptly checked oil and coolant levels. I added water to the healthy mix of water and coolant in the radiator and add a little bit of oil as well. No problems for a couple days then In the middle of college weekend in OBX fan does the same thing but shuts off by itself(july9). It was hot and muggy so i figured engine was a little wartm and it was doing overtime. When out next day fine until we got back and the fan would not shut off. fluid levels are ok pulled all the relays in the fuse box and it still kept running. I also tried to cool it by dousing the radiator directly with water with no avail. I finally had to scrounge a pair of pliers off a german fellow on vacation (talk about irony) to pull the fuse to finally shut it off. put the fuse in the next morning and the fan just started on its own. After several attempts finally got it to start, due to drained battery, drove it home and pulled the fuse back out, with the fan going the entire 6 hour drive home. First thought that it might be a bad sensor but I've been eyeing the temp gauge in my car and it reads normal. Does anyone know what it may be and how to fix it?
On the passenger side of the fan if you look down the inside, you will see a black box protruding from housing. While the fan is running on, tap that box. I used a 6" 3/8 extension but a screwdriver will do fine as well. If you tap the box and the fan goes off, then the relay is bad. The bad news is you can't replace the relay without taking out the entire assembly.
If sometimes the fan runs on but goes off on its own after 10 minutes or so, that is normal. It happens after a heavy load. First time I saw it was the 2003 Mini's on Top. All of our cars had fans on when we got to the top.
