2003 Cooper S wont start.

Ok here is what I know.
Replaced battery around 5 months ago after having intermittent starting issues that would drain the battery.
Rear O2 sensor failed around 3 months ago, replaced with Bosch universal. error codes cleared after approx 50 miles.
Front O2 sensor went out about a week later replaced same way codes didnt clear, found out bad wiring was responsible corrected and cleared.
no problems until today car was used this morning to run a few errands worked fine wife says it started a little "sluggish" i drove it after her no problems. went to drive vehicle this afternoon and its dead.
Turn key and i get a single loud click and a faint whirring sound.
when I am under the vehicle the click and whirr seem to come from the left (drivers side) of the starter motor.
was thinking possible starter motor or alternator issue and wanted opinions.
What I have done
Cleaned battery terminals and checked connections all is good.
Tried to jump the car with exactly the same results.
Tomorrow I plan to hook up the multi meter and check the voltage.

So, you turn the key to start and you hear a click right into a WRRRRRRRRRR! sound.?
Sounds like the bendex drive is shot in the starter. It's the starter just spining because the drive is not pushing the starter gear into the flywheel. Sounds maybe like it's time for a new starter.
